In aeronautics, a spoiler is a device which intentionally reduces the lift component of an airfoil in a controlled way. Spoilers are plates on the top surface of a wing that can be extended upward into the airflow to spoil the streamline flow. The spoiler creates a controlled stall over the portion of the wing behind it, greatly reducing the lift of that wing section. Spoilers can be used to "dump" lift and make the airplane descend; or they can be used to slow the airplane down as it prepares to land. When the airplane lands on the runway, the pilot usually brings up the spoilers to kill the lift, keep the plane on the ground, and make the brakes work more efficiently. Application of Bernoulli’s principal in CFD in aerfoil Design Bernoulli's principle is key in aerofoil design as it explains lift generation. The cambered shape of the aerofoil causes air to flow faster over the top surface, reducing pressure compared to the slower airflow below. This pressure difference creates lift. Adjusting the angle of attack further enhances lift, but care must be taken to avoid stall. Overall, the principle guides the design for optimal lift and minimal drag.
