𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐖𝐞 a𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞! 🌍 Growing up, I witnessed the impact of gender-based violence (GBV) on families and communities close to me. Seeing how it affected not only individuals close, but also entire neighborhoods deeply motivated me to take a stand. I realized that, for real change to happen, we need more than just laws and policies—we need empowered communities advocating together, fostering a culture that actively rejects GBV and supports survivors. This is where community advocacy becomes essential. Community advocacy isn’t just about speaking out; it is about building networks, educating others, and breaking the silence that often surrounds GBV. By uniting for a common cause, we become a force for change, challenging norms, supporting survivors, and pushing for accountability. When communities come together, they create a safe space where people can share experiences, educate one another, and work toward long-lasting solutions #CommunityAdvocacy #TogetherAgainstGBV #EndViolence #PowerInUnity.

In DEIB work, there’s a phrase I love: “Learn better, do better.” Being perfect all the time is never the goal; any humans seeking growth or change will continually realize ways we could be doing something differently to have the impact we seek. 💡So, it’s fitting that an org - that has taught me so much about DEIB, justice, advocacy, and racial equity - is now modeling that with a name change. 💡Referring to a person as a “homeless person” - we have come to realize - can be harmful. It labels a temporary situation with permanence, it robs the person of humanity, and it fails to center the true issue: a society that could be housing more humans and doesn’t do so. 💡While “homelessness” is still certainly a valid term, when we talk about humans impacted by it - we cause less harm if we say “unhoused” or “people experiencing homelessness.” This name change, logo change, and rebrand stills keep the acronym CCH that we know and love, while correcting the language and focus that will do the most good. We had no idea what we would learn as we set out on our end-of-life journey with a tangible project—a not-for-profit funeral service owned and led by the community. Looking back four years, creating a simple project plan while building community support seemed straightforward. We initially thought our efforts would focus on fundraising rather than advocacy. However, we soon realised that our approach needed to be more community-centric. We are now advocating for the Queensland Government to help us address systemic issues that hinder community innovation in meeting local needs. With your support and collaboration from institutions like Sunshine Coast Council, we are confident that we can overcome these challenges. We want to engage with you: What role does the community have in the end-of-life and funeral space? How can we establish a productive relationship with the institutions that manage our essential community infrastructure? Should the community have a say in the outcomes of this work?
