"The Food, Farming & Countryside Commission... [are] doing huge representative Food Conversations around the whole country to find out what people want from our food system and they have found that citizens describe the dominance of large UPF corporations as having crept up on us and they feel tricked into funding profit through their purchases.” FFCC advisor Dr Dolly van Tulleken talking about some of the insights coming out of #TheFoodConversation on BBC Radio 4's World at One this lunchtime 👏 As Dolly says, many citizens see big food companies as the clear winners in the system. They feel hoodwinked by the fact that so much of the food on shelves is ultra-processed and unhealthy – and they want government to step in to ensure the health of people and planet comes before private profit. Next month, we’re bringing citizens together with leaders in government, policy, business, health and farming at the Citizens Food Summit to explore the innovative, radical and practical opportunities for change. 🥕 What do we really want from food? How can we make it fairer, healthier and greener? 🥕 Last month, our co-founder Hannah Barlow joined our Partner Sue Pritchard from the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, Marija Rompani, Charlotte Hollins and James Perry at the recent Oxford Farming Conference. 📊 78% of Brits think we need to change how we do food. 75% think everyone should be able to afford healthy food. And a whopping 77% believe in having high standards for health and the environment. 📊 The panel discussed the role of business in enabling healthy habits, the role of Government intervention in the food system and the huge stake that the public has in this conversation as, quite simply, everyone eats. ➡️ #NewsAlert! Last night, Central London saw a vivid demonstration of the agriculture industry's growing discontent. 100 tractors, symbolizing the heart of farming itself, paraded past the iconic Houses of Parliament - a clear testament to the farmers' call for better support in UK food production. Read all about it here: [Tractors Gather at Parliament in Farmer Go-Slow Protest](https://lnkd.in/eyCGq6TJ) 💡Why does this matter? 🔸 At its core, this protest puts a spotlight on an industry crucial to every UK citizen - our food production system. 🔸 It symbolizes the urgent need for measures to ensure its stability and sustainability for generations to come. ⏩ Looking forward, could this be a wake-up call leading towards significant policy changes? 📌 Farmers put food on our tables. They maintain the landscape we value highly. They deliver reliable food production to secure our health. Yet, they express feelings of underappreciation and inadequate support. 📌 Now is the time to refocus on their essential role and to ensure they are adequately supported by our socio-economic system. 💭 What can we expect? 🔵 We may see an increased public dialogue around agriculture, food supply-chain processes, and the need to support local farmers. 🔵 Likely, such protests may be catalysts for reforms and drive home the point that sustainable food systems require public and governmental support. 🌾I anticipate a surge in policy initiatives, community support and awareness about #SustainableFarming and #LocalFoodSecurity - all spurred by this testament of solidarity from our farming community. #UKFarmers #AgriculturePolicy #FoodProduction #SupportLocalFarmers

The federal Farm Bill, which governs the nation's food, farm and nutrition assistance programs, is supposed to be updated every five years. The current Farm Bill, enacted in 2018, was to expire at the end of September 2023, but Congress was unable to reach an agreement and extended the 2018 measure for one year. That extension expires at the end of this month. And while it seems more likely than not that another extension will be needed, a coalition of leading organizations seeking a better food system is laying down its marker for its Farm Bill priorities. Read about the coalition's agenda — which Local Food Forum supports — and consider adding your organization's or company's name to the letter by the deadline this Thursday. Real change requires real collaboration. To build a food system that can thrive in a changing market and climate, each actor across the interconnected value chain will need to join to make a collaborative effort. The Australian Food & Agriculture Taskforce calls for the establishment of a coordinating body for the food system, to collaboratively drive transformation at the pace and scale required. This should include leaders from across the full value chain, representing a collective commitment to realising a stronger future for Australia’s food system.
