The importance of shorter supply chains in the path towards food systems transformation    In the last of the ten areas of action that UNDP FACS proposes to drive a food systems transformation, we explore how strengthening shorter supply chains can make a huge difference.    A shorter supply chain often means working with a more concentrated group of suppliers, fostering stronger relationships and collaboration.    Shorter supply chains promote food security and resilience, especially in times of crisis, by ensuring communities have reliable access to fresh produce and essential goods. How can we leverage sustainable finance to accelerate food systems transformation? During the Food, Agriculture, and Water day at #COP29, FAIRR was delighted to co-host an event with WWF on realigning food finance with climate and nature goals. Panellists discussed the centrality of the agri-food sector to addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and ensuring food security. They also explored how harmful agriculture subsidies can be repurposed to better align public finance with sustainable food production. The United Nations General Assembly designated September 29 as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The day is co-convened by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN’s Environment Programme (UNEP). This year is the fifth observance and will highlight the critical need for financing to bolster efforts to reduce food loss and waste, contribute to achieving climate goals and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness to the importance of the problem and its possible solutions at all levels, and to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, which targets to halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains.

We need more funding and finance for agroecological food systems. Public climate finance should be contributing, but current levels are marginal (1.5%!). Rosinah Mbenya and I make the case for new funds for farmer organisations to support a shift to #agroecology, adapt to climate change, and implement solutions to phase out fossil fuels.
