Today’s edition in Boundless Brand Design’s series of ‘Spirit Of My Grandad’ is a truly unique miniature of Martini Elixir di China, which we estimate to have been bottled in the 1950s or 1960s.
This Martini liquid, made using cinchona bark that is no longer sold, makes the little bottle a true gem to decode.
The liquid is called an ‘Elixir', hinting at its bitters origins and their medicinal use. Much of the miniature’s design helps to tell that apothecary story: the amber glass, the sepia label color, which makes the bottle feel older than it is (even for the 50s!).
Below the iconic - and very much similar to today’s - Martini logo, ‘Elixir di China aromatico’ is written in an exquisite and ornamental gothic font.
The lower part of the label introduces the liquid and lists its main ingredient, the ‘corteccia di china calissaia’ (meaning cinchona bark), using the same gothic font in black and red colors. The lowest part repeats Martini Rossi and the brand’s origin city - Turin.
The result is a beautifully crafted label that resembles a Medieval recipe book, hand-written, ancient and irreplaceable. A decorated border of red and pink leaves adds to that effect, framing the label as a precious manuscript.
All these considered, highly crafted details transport the observer back in time, inviting them to dive into the rich history and distilling skill encapsulated in every drop.
