FoodDrinkEurope has joined 27 other trade association in endorsing the European Commission’s approach to cut administrative burden relief and simplify regulation over the next 5 years. In our joint statement today, we call on the Commission to focus in particular on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) as an essential priority and to this end, policymakers should take 3 key steps: 1. Immediately launch a comprehensive competitiveness assessment of CS3D to identify where simplification, clarification and burden reduction should be achieved within upcoming implementing legislation. 2. Adopt any guidelines or implementing legislation at least two years before compliance with the legislation becomes mandatory otherwise extend the transition period. 3. Make harmonisation and interoperability of rules key pillars in supporting Europe’s competitiveness and ensuring a well-functioning Single Market. Time for the European Commission to really deliver! Now more than ever.... The need for #implementing legislation to be delivered at least two years before compliance is something that should apply to all pieces of legislation, also the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR.....We have seen on the Single Use Plastics Directive #SUP how the drafting of implementing measures has moved very slowly and in some cases, just a few months before 2025 compliance dates, we are still waiting for them....Business cannot operate in this way. Obligation for compliance should be shared! We as business do our job to invest to comply, but policymakers need to do their job in developing the tools to actually enable that compliance.

Fully support this! We need a thorough assessment of the CS3D to identify and address priority areas where simplification, clarification and burden reduction can be achieved within upcoming implementing legislation and guidance. Businesses will need support to navigate through all these new reporting and due diligence requirements, many of which are overlapping and sometimes inconsistent, and streamline the reporting requirements under different legislation. We also need tailored solutions and guidance for our tourism industry.

📢 Even before the EU supply chain law (CSDDD) recently agreed by the EU member states comes into force, companies based in Germany are already obliged by the LkSG to comply with human rights due diligence obligations. Standard systems or premium payments can provide support in implementing the legal requirements. 💡In our 27th Lunchbreak, we will address the question of how standard-setting organizations can support companies in implementing their due diligence obligations, what additional measures are necessary and what is already being implemented in practice. 📅 When? On Friday, April 5, 2024 from 12 - 1 pm ▶️ This time, a member of the German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa will provide input: Lara Hutt, Senior Officer Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence at Fairtrade Deutschland, will present Fairtrade's instruments for implementing due diligence obligations in supply chains, point out the limits of the influence of standard-setting organizations and explain the role of certifications and associated premium payments. ▶️ A company representative will then explain the importance of certifications from a company perspective and outline the additional measures that serve to implement corporate due diligence obligations in the cocoa supply chain. The European Union (#EU) has recently started to propose dedicated chapters on Sustainable Food Systems (#SFS), which encapsulates the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of food #sustainability in a holistic manner. The article by Rena Eliz Hänel explores the question of whether and in which ways the regulatory approach advanced in SFS chapters in recent EU trade agreements reflects the holistic approach of the SFS framework. It argues that although SFS chapters cover a broad range of policy issues, they do not address the key issues of food security and demand-side interventions. EU takes first step towards regulating Green Claims on Food Products The wait is over: The EU published the Directive Empowering the Consumer in the Green Transition (#ECGT), starting the 2.5-year countdown until general environmental and unverified climate claims on food products will be banned. This is only the first step the EU is taking to help consumers make more informed decisions when buying their food and drinks. Next week, the EU Parliament will debate and vote on the draft Directive supposed to provide further clarity on the implementation of the #ECGT, the Green Claims Directive. However, based on Parliament sources, a final version of this second piece of legislation targeting #greenwashing will not be published before the EU elections on June 6-9, 2024. What else will change starting September 2026? The #ECGT will also prohibit traders from advertising imported products as meeting specific requirements (such as sustainability or climate-related ones) when the requirements are imposed by law on all products. BCI helps companies and industry organizations stay on top of regulatory and trade developments.
