I am delighted to share a recent publication in which I had the honour of being a co-author the publication was led by Delia Atzori and Ben Sonneveld. The paper is titled "Nutrition Fragility in Isolation: Food Insecurity in Small Island Developing States" and published in Springer's Food Security journal, boasting an impressive Impact Factor of 6.7 (2022). The study delves into the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), addressing issues like reliance on food imports, unbalanced diets, and limited resources. Our approach includes standardized methodology, utilizing the latest FAO data, and presenting results with user-friendly geo-visualization and infographics. Key findings emphasize the critical need for policy interventions, revealing that 94% of SIDS don't meet food group requirements. None meet micronutrient doses, highlighting gaps in dietary diversity. This cost-efficient approach, based on existing databases, calls for improvements in international databases' timeliness and coverage for SIDS. https://lnkd.in/gWzEhS_W

During the Global Food Regulators Summit, 2024, the second day (21st September) was devoted to Enhancing Regional collaboration and Harmonization in standard setting process. The forenoon session was a panel discussion and was chaired by Dr Awilo Ochieng Pernet, former Codex Chairperson and the afternoon session (chaired by me) had four break-out sessions in the following areas: 1. Global standards for Nutraceuticals and Health Supplements; 2. Evolving Regional / International standards and new proposals; 3. Existing and emerging hazards and risks - pesticides, antimicrobials, food frauds, and novel foods; 4. Food Control: risk-based inspection, implementation of Standards & Codes of Practices, and import controls Each group came up with key recommendations. FSSAI was requested to compile all the recommendations in the form of a matrix and propose areas of intervention by FAO, WHO, CCAsia and other stakeholders. Amazing that we still do not have a clear definition for what constitutes financing for food and nutrition security. Depending on the definition used, estimates of global overseas development assistance range from 13.9 billion to 62.6 billion, a difference of almost 40 billion! A common definition is needed to better track how much is being spent. LinkedIn Post 📢 Exciting News from Our Latest Research! 🌍 We're thrilled to announce the publication of our study in BMC Public Health, which explores the adherence to food labeling standards among pre-packaged snacks in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This study sheds light on the significant gap between local and imported snack products in complying with Tanzanian and international (Codex) labeling standards. 🔍 Key Findings: Partial adherence was observed in 54% of the snacks to Tanzanian standards and 67% to international standards. Imported products demonstrated better adherence compared to local options. There is a pressing need for more inclusive labeling practices, including the use of Kiswahili and the implementation of WHO Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FoPL). The results highlight the urgent need for stronger regulatory frameworks and enhanced support for local producers to improve food labeling, helping consumers make healthier food choices and addressing the rise in diet-related noncommunicable diseases. 🔗 Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/e7mErkbe for more insights and implications for public health policy.
