The Changing Landscape: A Personal Perspective In South Africa, a silent transformation is taking place. Central Business Districts (CBDs), once the lifeblood of our cities, are witnessing a gradual decline. This is an anomaly when compared to cities like New York and London, where CBDs remain vibrant and vital. In contrast, the rise of shopping malls in South Africa paints a picture of booming consumerism. This shift, while economically driven, has a profound cultural impact, one that is deeply personal to me. The Personal Cost: Geneva Bakery Amidst this transformation, I find myself mourning the loss of a piece of my beloved city. Geneva Bakery, a German bakery based in Krugersdorp, South Africa, is closing shop today after a 60-year legacy. This Continental-style family business has been producing quality baking for decades and is now run by its second generation of internationally trained bakers. I grew up with the smell of their fresh cream doughnuts wafting through the air. The memory of their petit fours, a delicate bite of heaven, is etched in my mind(had the previlage of having 300 of those as my wedding cake over 21 years ago). But today, those memories will be confined to the pages of history. The Cultural Impact The closing of Geneva Bakery is not just the end of a business; it’s the fading away of a piece of our culture. It’s a reminder of the cost we pay for 'progress'. The bakery was more than a shop; it was a landmark, a testament to the rich tapestry of our community. As we embrace the future, it’s crucial that we don’t lose sight of our past. Businesses like Geneva Bakery are more than just establishments; they are repositories of our collective memories and shared experiences. They deserve to be preserved, cherished, and protected just like our cities! In the face of relentless modernisation, let us not forget the value of our cultural heritage. Let us strive to maintain our urban commercial areas, to keep alive the spirit of businesses like Geneva Bakery. Because some things, once lost, can never be replaced. This morning, I had to pop in and get some eats for the last time.

Wegmans Just Purchased Land For Their Their First Charlotte Store. Wegmans Food Markets is opening its first Charlotte store in Ballantyne in 2026. After seeing explosive growth throughout 2023 with 100 store openings and the debut of a flagship location in New York City's Times Square, Raising Cane's plans to continue expanding at a breakneck pace in 2024. The southern chain—known for its signature chicken fingers (130 calories apiece), Texas toast (140 calories), crinkle-cut fries (390 calories), and famous Cane's sauce (190 calories)—is on pace to open a whopping 90 new locations this year, QSR Magazine reported. This expansion push should help Raising Cane's end the year with more than 850 restaurants and further cement its status as one of America's largest chicken chains.
