Ignore the crazy lady at the gym audibly exclaiming "YES! EXACTLY!" while listening to another top-notch Lenny's Newsletter podcast with Roger Martin. Roger touched on a topic I've been noodling on a lot lately: Why are so many CEOs avoiding big-picture strategy conversations? It got me thinking back to another podcast I listened to months ago, which explained that humans often avoid making decisions because making a decision means mourning the other options we did not choose. We don't want to "give up" any options, so we freeze in decision paralysis mode. However, not making any decision is still "making a decision," and it means losing even MORE options. It's completely illogical. Similarly, many leaders seem reluctant to choose a path. The first 3 of Roger's 5 questions are essentially "What's your goal? Where are you playing? How will you win?" which all seem like pretty obvious questions, yet some people don't want to answer those. Instead, they zoom in on tactical discussions about digital ad strategy or sales cycles and focus on sprinting... but without any idea which direction they must go to reach a finish line. Roger attributes a lot of this behavior to the fact that strategic gains are harder, and people, of course, want a "diet pill" for success. I can't decide if it's fear of difficulty, though, or fear of choosing the wrong direction and therefore choosing none at all. Thoughts? https://lnkd.in/eA44VWNK
