A Learning Management System (LMS) is a web technology or application that facilitates in-person, virtual, or hybrid learning sessions. It allows instructors to easily deliver lessons, follow up on student progress, and assess student performance. Typically, an LMS has an interactive user interface and features like gamification, discussion forums, quizzes and learning optimization. These features enhance knowledge management and offer a range of benefits to any organization, primarily optimizing an organization's learning strategy. An enterprise learning management system is a central platform for managing employee training and activities. An enterprise LMS helps companies organize training content, track learning, and oversee certifications. In the chart below, we look at the domain rankings of some of the popular Learning Management Systems. As can be seen from the chart, a fair amount of consolidation has happened in the domain rankings. Rippling and Graphy Inc. have dominated the domain rankings with the former's domain rank increasing from 4,670,976 in September 2017 to 7,672 in December 2024. During the same period, Graphy's domain rank increased from 6,198,729 to 15,432. Coassemble and Epignosis learning technologies (efrontlearning) also improved their domain ranking - from 22,535,299 and 826,834 to 270,033 and 110,138 respectively in December 2024. Coassemble has been the undisputed leader with regards to absolute improvement in domain ranking. Seismic's domain rank decreased marginally from an all-time high of 26,745 in July 2020 to 43,684 in December 2024. QA Ltd's (Cloudacademy) domain rank witnessed the steepest decline - falling from 181,611 in September 2017 to 1,018,063 in December 2024. BrainCert's domain ranking has witnessed wild fluctuations declining to an all-time low of 25,129,201 in December 2020 before eventually recovering to 843,554 in December 2024.

Reflecting on Choosing an LMS As I reflect on my journey of selecting a Learning Management System , I’d like to share some insights that go beyond basic tips on where to look and what to consider. Here’s my perspective as a Learning Experience Designer on the latest solutions available. 😃Ecosystem Integration Learning is not an isolated process within a company; it's crucial to integrate the LMS with a coherent infrastructure, including HRIS, corporate messengers, and other tools. Modern platforms usually have this integration covered, making things easier for both learners and those managing the process. 🫤Content Creation Mixed Feelings. Simplicity is the new black. It feels like developers prioritize beginners in content creation rather than professionals. While I understand the need for simplicity, when it comes to creating more sophisticated content, the limitations are evident. 🤔Modernizing Content Formats I often hear that developers deem certain formats outdated (like presentations or PDFs) and make them difficult to upload into the LMS. While I appreciate the push for modern approaches, isn’t it too bold to make such decisions on behalf of clients? Flexibility in content formats is key to meeting diverse needs. 😉AI Integration Currently, there is nothing groundbreaking in terms of AI integration in LMS solutions. I look forward to seeing more innovative applications in this area. 😭😭😭What's Missing? There seems to be a gap in how learners interact with their learning experience. While learners can view courses taken, results, and skills, the process of reflecting on and processing information is often neglected. I`d like to see incorporated retrieval practice elements. For example, after reading a module, learners could write down the key ideas they remember, activating their memory. Numerous studies show that retrieval practice significantly enhances learning. This is just one idea that comes first, there are many options. Effort-Based Feedback An additional feature could be effort-based feedback, where learners rate the effort they put into a task. This self-assessment can provide valuable insights into their learning process. 🤝 I think it's great to see educational trends being put into practice. On the other hand, there’s tremendous potential for LMS developers and Learning Experience Designers to collaborate and create truly meaningful experiences.

Corporate LMS vs. Academic LMS 🌐 As an instructional designer and eLearning consultant, I've analyzed various LMS platforms to find the best fit for different learning environments. Effective use of an LMS requires strong instructional design practices, such as creating engaging, learner-focused content. Corporate LMS: Focus: Employee training, performance tracking, and compliance. Features: Integrations with HR systems, personalized learning paths, and analytics. Examples: Cornerstone OnDemand, SAP Litmos, Docebo. Example: In Docebo, I integrated SharePoint to create a centralized knowledge repository, enhancing learner access to materials and collaboration. Academic LMS: Focus: Structured coursework, grading, and student engagement. Features: Discussion boards, assignment submissions, and grading tools. Examples: Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard. Example: In Canvas, I used the Quiz App to create interactive assessments that provided immediate feedback and progress tracking for students. Unfortunately, too many organizations make simple mistakes in their selection process. Five mistakes not to make when selecting an LMS are: 1. Ignoring User Needs One of the greatest LMS pitfalls is when needs assessment for final users, both learners and administrators, is bypassed. Latest features in an LMS would be of no use if it did not fit into the daily routine of the users. Run a thorough needs assessment and get feedback from possible users to ensure the LMS supports workflows and learning styles. 2. Overlooking Future Scalability As your organization grows, so will the potential for needing more from your LMS. Neglecting to consider how scalable an LMS is could lead to quite a headache, so choose one that grows and adapts along with more users, more courses, and new technology for your organization. 3. Overlooking Integration Capabilities An LMS doesn't exist alone. It should integrate with all existing systems: HR platforms, CRM tools, and other content management systems.
