Before Ford, Chrysler, or General Motors became household names, there was C.R. Patterson—a man whose determination and innovation broke barriers and built history. Charles Richard Patterson, born into slavery in 1833, forged his way into freedom and entrepreneurship, becoming the founder of the first African American-owned automobile company in the United States. He turned his experience as a blacksmith into a thriving business, producing horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to the automotive world under C.R. Patterson & Sons. The Patterson-Greenfield car, released in 1915, stood as a testament to the craftsmanship and forward-thinking vision of the Patterson family. It was more than just a car—it was proof that innovation knows no boundaries of race or background. But the challenges of competing with industrial giants like Ford made sustaining production a battle the company could not ultimately win. Though no Patterson-Greenfield cars are known to have survived to today, C.R. Patterson's legacy endures. He blazed a trail for Black innovation in the automotive industry—a trail that Pontiac Motor Company now seeks to expand upon as we revive a beloved brand and bring it into the future. Sometimes, a simple letter can change an industry. One man's note to General Motors led to the creation of the V8 Corvette, forever altering the automobile industry. That man, known as the "Father of Corvette," was Zora Arkus-Duntov. “The letter – dubbed Thoughts Pertaining to Youth, Hot Rodders, and Chevrolet – was written by the then-assistant staff engineer on December 16, 1953, and explained how the young men in the burgeoning hot rod market were overwhelmingly opting for Ford parts in their never-ending quest for performance. Arkus-Duntov’s belief, however, was that once those young men got a bit older, they would be looking to trade in their old, home-built hot rods for something newer and nicer. Not Enough Traction The late great Carroll Shelby was often known to say that “there is no such thing as too much horsepower, just not enough traction.” It’s clear what #power and #traction look like in a car but how does this apply to our everyday work lives? I liken power to things like energy, hustle, grit, gumption, determination, persistence, and effort. All of those characteristics are crucial to success in this world, especially the real estate world. But with all of that power comes the need for traction. For me, traction is systems, mentors, training, discipline, education, and protocol. Without that traction all that power goes to waste. I have always been someone with a lot of energy, hustle, grit, gumption, determination, persistence and energy. I had always had the horsepower. The trouble was years ago when I was younger I was riding on skinny tires without the systems, training, dicipline, education and protocol. I was like that Dodge #Hellcat in the video; all that power, not enough traction. It took time to learn the systems - develop my own - find the right mentors, training, education and protocol and train myself to be disciplined, but it was worth it. Once I had the traction I was able to put the power to good use. Caroll Shelby had a hand in developing some of the most iconic cars this country has seen including the Shelby Cobra, the Shelby Daytona, the Ford GT40, the Shelby Mustang Cobra GT 500 and even my personal favorite the Dodge Viper. The Dodge Viper was one of the most powerful cars of its time - both in horsepower and torque - and it also had the widest tires of any production vehicle ever built to handle all that power. The engineers knew that in order to maximize all of the power they created they needed the most traction available. This is just a friendly reminder that you can have all the power in the world but without the proper traction you’ll just be spinning your wheels.
