The Foreign Policy and Security Conference took place on Saturday, April 27th, with the first session exploring the increasing use of private military companies throughout the 21st century. Exploring the implications of this were our esteemed panelists, Dr. Chris Kinsey and Marina Tovar. This session was moderated by our Co-Logistics Director, Mehmet Yusuf Temur, and provided an interesting summary of the evolving roles of PMCs in the modern context. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Christopher Kinsey and Marina Tovar for providing their time and their great contributions to the discussion, to Mehmet for his moderation, and to all our members who were in attendance.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin issued a new classified strategy this week that outlines the Pentagon’s contemporary approach for countering on-the-rise, adversarial drone threats that continue to pose urgent risks to U.S. military personnel and assets — domestically and abroad. During a briefing with reporters on Thursday, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder announced the limited release of this new holistic and enterprise-wide plan for confronting certain potentially harmful uncrewed systems, which he noted are “changing how wars are fought.” https://lnkd.in/eA-gQtP8

The Decision Making Model: The OODA loop -- Observe, Orient, Decide and Act -- is a four-step approach to decision-making that focuses on filtering available information, putting it in context and quickly making the most appropriate decision, while also understanding that changes can be made as more data becomes available. The OODA loop developed by military strategist and United States Air Force Colonel John Boyd. He applied the concept to the combat operations process, often at the operational level during military campaigns. It is often applied to understand commercial operations, Businesses and learning processes.

The U.S. government needs to be quicker about rolling out new integrated deterrence efforts, the Pentagon’s top military officer says, as global tensions have risen since the Biden administration made the concept a key part of its national-security strategy. “What is old is new again. What is new is further complicated by emerging domains and technology. We needed a deterrence strategy to be integrated by design to deal with these modern challenges, and I would argue we need to be faster at developing and applying our new framework,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. CQ Brown said Wednesday during U.S. Strategic Command’s Deterrence Symposium. Audrey Decker has more at: https://lnkd.in/ddVuyHXH #DOD #StrategicCommand #Defense

It's FOIA Fact Friday! Q: What event in July 1947 remains one of the most popular subjects of CIA FOIA requests? A: "The Roswell Incident." An intriguing event for conspiracy theorists and even the general public, "The Roswell Incident" refers to an alleged UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico. According to a document released in 2019: "Since the beginning of the CIA's FOIA program, documents on these topics have been among the most frequently requested... The CIA responds that it holds no information on this alleged event." Some information about Area 51 in this document has been redacted - adding to speculation that there is more to the story than the CIA has let on. However, Area 51 is used as a training range for the US Air Force. So the redacted information is likely run-of-the-mill military intelligence rather than a UFO coverup. My book, "Secrets of the Vietnam Civil War" is based on the information gleaned from recently declassified Top Secret Documents of the Office of the Historian in the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, and many of the U.S. Intelligence Agencies such as the National Security Agency. Readers may recall that the NSC was formed in 1952 under President Truman and operated for several decades before its existence was revealed unintentionally in testimony before Congressional Committees. As you may know, in the reorganization of the Military Intelligence Agencies under Truman there were many more Intelligence Agencies formed. You will learn a great deal about the reorganization as well as the dramatic shift in the focus of the U.S. military intelligence agencies from an Isolationist, inward focus to an International focus to a global one to block any future attacks on the U.S. Military as occurred at Pearl Habor on December 7, 1941.

It was in 2021 that I first published this article with my co-authors. With the challenges faced by leaders today, whether it's the military, government or other rules and compliance-based organizations, this article is still relevant. The findings from my research show the potential contradictions and tensions that arise for leaders when trying to be ethical and virtuous and the importance of agency and an individual's subject positions.
