If you're interested in international relations, you'll want to check this out 💣 Really great piece today by Luca Booth on Pragmat UK examining the security dilemma and the effects of nations building up arms capabilities on others. If you've got a spare moment, would really encourage you to check this one out - https://lnkd.in/eNvXdqEg
Can Nations Enhance Security Without Triggering an Arms Race? 💣 The security dilemma, a key realist concept, posits that when a state strengthens its military for self-defence, it can inadvertently threaten others, leading to an arms race. Key to mitigating this issue is whether defensive measures distinctly outweigh offensive capabilities. But is such a distinction practical? Luca Booth examines this complex challenge in international relations today on Pragmat - https://lnkd.in/eQ-fk6E7

It is a pleasure to contribute another policy perspective paper to the Canadian Global Affairs Institute titled "Taiwan’s Deterrence Equation: Calculating Gray Zone Strategies to Address China’s Assertiveness." #conflictmanagement #deterrence #peace "...it becomes imperative to focus on establishing a collective security agenda that can sustainably meet the challenges of gray zone conflict. Therein, a prudent choice would be an emphasis on the comprehensive approach." https://lnkd.in/d2WEZFbt

At the #CopenhagenDemocracySummit, President Tsai emphasized #Taiwan's dedication to democracy, resilience, and global partnerships in the face of authoritarian threats. VP Lai introduced his #NationalProjectofHope, focusing on defense, economic security, and cross-strait stability, outlining four key pillars: "1. Strengthened national defense and asymmetric capabilities. 2. Improved economic security and supply chains. 3. Building partnerships with democratic countries. 4. Establishing a stable and principled cross-strait leadership." Regarding the cross-strait issue, Lai stated, "We will work to safeguard the status quo on both sides. I will not rule out dialogue with China on the principles of mutual respect, mutual benefits, and dignity, with no preconditions." Check out the full text and video HERE! 🔗 https://shorturl.at/kuKNY

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and shifting geopolitical landscapes, the concept of security cooperation has emerged as a pivotal strategy for nations seeking to navigate the complex tapestry of global relations. Far from being a mere diplomatic nicety, security cooperation represents a critical tool for achieving strategic aims, fostering stability, and promoting peace. For all security professionals all over the world, Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Corinthians 16:13.

"SELF-DESTRUCTION OF TAIWAN" ACCORDING TO CHINESE STRATEGY The near future of the competition between great powers is being written in Singapore. I have the honour to be a member of the IISS International Institute for Strategic Studies which, as every year, is bringing together Defence Ministers, Chiefs of Staff and leaders of the Aerospace Defence and Security industries from around the world, in the extraordinary IISS Shangri-La Dialogue event. In fact, the world's most important Indo-Pacific security debate is being hosted by IISS from 31 May to 2 June 2024 in Singapore and I am pleased to provide you with a link to watch the main debates live. Dramatically relevant is the speech by China's new Defence Minister. The premise is that in 2023, China launched its Global Security Initiative which highlighted the need to address contemporary security challenges through various initiatives, norms and partnerships. China is actively engaged in multilateral initiatives, military exercises with regional partners and pursues new forms of security cooperation, and has formally sought to become more involved in mediating conflicts in different parts of the world. In this session, China outlined its strategy for security in the Asia-Pacific region. The message was all too clear: Taiwan is pursuing independence incrementally and those who support it 'will end up in self-destruction', warned China's new Defence Minister on Sunday in a wide-ranging speech at a security summit in Singapore, where the scale of regional tensions was in sharp focus. Minister of National Defence Admiral Dong Jun made these comments in a roughly 30-minute speech that comes just days after Beijing staged major military exercises surrounding the island of Taiwan after inaugurating its new democratically elected president last month. "We will take resolute action to curb Taiwan's independence and ensure that such a plot never succeeds," Dong said speaking through a translator, criticising "outside interference forces" for selling arms and having "illegal official contacts" with Taiwan, in an apparent reference to the United States, which maintains close unofficial ties with Taiwan. "China remains committed to peaceful reunification. However, this prospect is increasingly being eroded by Taiwan independence separatists and foreign forces," Dong warned. Xi Jinping has declared that he wants China to become a "true maritime power." The country has been expanding its navy, the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) at breakneck speed. But China is also setting up a huge global network of ports, as part of its Belt and Road Initiative. China needs ports as the world's top export nation. It needs access to key trade routes to keep its economy running. But Chinese ports are about more than just trade. ..

All day long on the news, you'll hear about China: China-USA China-Taiwan China-Philippines China-Japan China-Iran China-Russia and the bit goes on and on... If you look carefully, you'll notice that this constant noise parallels the amount of noise you get when dealing with Chinese suppliers. Just like the Beijing overlords, Chinese suppliers often lack a clear strategy, relying instead on short-term, low-quality tactics to maximize their immediate gains. From where I'm sitting, this is exactly where we gain the upper hand all they know is how to act as if they are in control (secretly soiling their pants ) while we need to ensure we truly are and always in control! Always ! https://lnkd.in/g3mejYrt
