Despite the tensions linked to Jokowi nowadays, global cooperation grew during his period. One of his legacies is OECD accession. Rifky Pratama Wicaksono and I's op-ed in the East Asia Forum outlines several problems that Indonesia will encounter during the accession process, including accountability and governance. The highly stringent OECD standards will indirectly encourage Indonesia upward. For further reading: https://lnkd.in/gnTifnar

Really interesting article about how Indonesia's foreign policy under Jokowi's administration is predominantly not based on a "big vision" about Indonesia's role in the international stage, but very much based on very pragmatic and self-interested (economic) reasons. it's even more interesting because Ben Bland, the author, emphasizes Jokowi's individual factors as a former timber businessman rather than domestic political factors in explaining the nature of Indonesia's foreign policy.

Nothing substantial will come out of this ASEAN meeting either, as each country, including Malaysia, will act diplomatically to serve their agendas and goals. There will be more rhetoric than concrete actions in resolving contentious issues that have been going on year after year. #asean #wasteoftime #unproductive #weak

The line, 'This illustrates how ignorant some policymakers were, as they were incapable of even distinguishing between economics and business,' really stands out to me. It captures so much of what we've faced. Thank you for sharing this insight, Saya Dr. Winston Set Aung.

https://lnkd.in/gzzrAnWz However, considering China is located far beyond the 200nm-exclusive economic zone and the 350nm-continental shelf, there is no way Indonesia should negotiate a maritime boundary delimitation with China. This is a huge loss for Indonesia’s ability to manage its natural resources

My article in Indonesia at Melbourne has been published. It discusses Indonesia's consideration of normalizing ties with Israel, a shift motivated by its desire to join the OECD. This potential move has sparked controversy due to Indonesia's historical support for Palestine and could have significant domestic and international consequences. Normalization could boost OECD prospects and economic opportunities but risks alienating a public sympathetic to Palestine and destabilizing Indonesia's anti-colonial foreign policy stance. The article highlights the complex interplay between economic goals and ideological principles in Indonesian foreign policy, further complicated by the government's unclear position, fueling the public debate. https://lnkd.in/gyqG8cRx

It is not important what LW or Anwar said. These sort of PR statements should not be treated as sage advice. Or taken seriously. It is important to note that Lawrence's first stop as PM is Malaysia. (Brunei is next because it is an easy stop and why not?) The next stop is likely to be China or Indonesia (because the US is in the midst of an election so wisest to stay clear.) This has not changed and will not change. (For now,) Malaysia, Indonesia are our closest neighbours and larger than Singapore by 12x in total. China and US are most important trading and political partners - and are in the midst of a public geopolitical and economic decoupling. Then there is ASEAN and India. Japan and Germany. And Korea, Australia, UK and NZ.
