I have just ended a very good panel discussion at Arendalsuka about the electrification of the boating sector and the technology shift that the maritime industry is facing with focus on fast charging. Splendidly arranged by Peder Tellefsdal at Lydløs. The need or search for emission free operation at sea in the shipping and boating world is somewhat tricky and there is not "one solution fits all". Electrification has many hurdles, marine charging network is one, the weight and energy density of batteries another. Done correct, with a design that matches the need and the operation, battery electric propulsion provides a very attractive solution. For others, wind propulsion / sailing and alternative fuels, like methanol is a better solution. Like always, it depends on the operational profile. At RISE Research Institutes of Sweden Maritime at RISE we are working with a interesting project which was in the spotlight of the panel discussion, the emission free battery electric foiling Sea Rescue boat (https://lnkd.in/dWnAhJaN). It is a massive effort to transform high demand work boats to become emission free. The demands for a sea rescue boat is far different from a pleasure craft of the same size. One of the most important demands is that the boat itself should not be a burden to the crew, but help the crew deliver a better job, rescuing those in need. Work is still ongoing and some new partners are joining. Soon we are out flying. #wearefoiling, #elbat, #electrification, Lydløs, go:LEIF, Zparq AB, Aston Harald Composite AB, Micropower Group, Volvo Penta, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Mantaray Hydrofoil Craft. The 28th edition of the biennial #Posidonia Exhibition recently concluded with resounding success, solidifying its status as a crucial platform for shaping the future of the maritime industry. With projections indicating the sector's worth to reach $4.2 trillion by 2031, Posidonia remains an essential space for #collaboration and #innovation. Discussions during the conference focused on pressing issues like Maritime education, decarbonization, and sustainability strategies, emphasizing the importance of a unified approach towards tackling these #challenges. In my opinion prominent theme during the conference was the emphasis on "pragmatism" as industry leaders attempted to strike a balance between environmental goals and practical solutions. Despite acknowledging the advancements made in recent years, the industry identifies the necessity for a more realistic approach to ensure sustainable progress. Some Key Deals/Collaborations at Posidonia 2024: ➡️ MAN Energy Solutions signed a MoU with Eastern Pacific Shipping on the development of crew training for the handling of ammonia as fuel on vessels. ➡️ KR and HD Hyundai signed a MoU to collaborate on the pilot project of a cloud-based next-generation smart ship solution (ISS 2.0) developed by HD Hyundai. This project aims to equip and demonstrate next-generation smart ship solutions on vessels. KR plans to conduct technical reviews based on classification rules as well as domestic and international regulations, verifying the suitability of the next-generation smart ship solutions ➡️ Lloyd’s Register and Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) signed a joint development project for the design of the world’s largest very large ammonia carrier (VLAC). Carrying capacity of 100,000 cu m, the vessel will feature an independent IMO type B tank for the safe storage of ammonia which is expected to optimise its operational efficiency. ➡️ ABS also signed an MoU with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE); HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co., Ltd. (HHI); and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to collaborate on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to eliminate ship safety blind spots. ➡️ ADNOC buying Navig8 to meet expanding transport demands from its parent’s energy growth. Overall Posidonia 2024 served as a crucial landmark for the maritime community, highlighting that collaboration, innovation, and maintaining a balanced outlook are vital components in charting the industry's future course. #shipping #maritimeindustry #shippingindustry Sources : Safety4sea Pls Refer to the link for details : https://lnkd.in/eDWgdDeh

World’s first remote-controlled ferry has left the quay MF Estelle, the world's first self-driving electric ferry, has successfully travelled completely autonomously between two major islands in central Stockholm. The trial was conducted with a remote operator in Trondheim, Norway, and a responsible master on board. - We wanted to test whether the ferry could cross a large bay in central Stockholm and dock on the other side all by itself, after just a push of a button 600 kilometers away in Norway. The trial was the first ever of its kind and showed that it is possible. In this way, we can learn together and create a market for smart ships, says Håkan Burden, senior researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. - Our research area concerns how to safely introduce novel technologies from a policy perspective. This project starts out from the rules of today, both national and international, as we have started to explore the safety case for remote-operated autonomous ships, says Susanne Stenberg, senior researcher at RISE. The experiences from this Policy Lab Urban Zjöfart (PLUZ) project, where RISE is a partner, will contribute to the international policy work that is underway within the UN Maritime Organization (IMO) and the EU Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The results will create new conditions for sustainable mobility services. PLUZ is financed by the Swedish Transport Administration's maritime portfolio. In addition to RISE, DNV, the Ports of Stockholm, Torghatten, Vattenbussen and Zeabuz are participating. #remotecontrolledferry #pluzproject #sustainablemobilityservices

📢The Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme #project Blue Economy sYnergies fOr sustaiNable Development (BEYOND) held its First Regional Sustainable Blue Economy (LAB) for the pilot region of Veneto in Italy, which was attended by OGS - Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, a partner in the 30-month long project. 📍Where? t2i trasferimento tecnologico e innovazione - Treviso Rovigo incubator, Veneto, Italy 🇮🇹 The LAB took place inside a two-day event, organised by t2i, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Venice and Rovigo, where #innovation, advanced technology and #sustainability was discussed, and how these redefine the future of manufacturing and construction. 🗓When? 13 November ❓️What? The LAB provided an opportunity to discuss innovative solutions within the #BlueEconomy, with a focus on #renewableenergy, fisheries and aquaculture. The event involved stakeholders, who attended to discuss sustainable strategies and promote the growth of the sector at regional level, and was organised by t2i and Sinloc - Sistema Iniziative Locali SpA, both partners in BEYOND. Among the stakeholders who attended was also Veneto local action group, VEGAL. 🎯Project BEYOND, which is led by the Istrian Regional Energy Agency (IRENA) in Croatia, aims to develop alternative offshore wind power, and a model which moves systems from single minded orientation to grid electric energy production, and ultimately towards multifaceted evaluation and use of their infrastructure, thus creating synergies with other blue economy sectors and renewable energy production forms. These synergies will result in improved quality of marine ecosystems, increased opportunities for aquaculture and fishing, and increased production and use of green hydrogen. There are four pilot regions within the Project: Veneto and Puglia in Italy, and Istria and Dalmatia in Croatia. #BlueSkills #windenergy
