L., Bal, B., Hirschtritt, M. E., & Barnard, A. (2024). Insights from California on involuntary commitment for substance use. In 2024 we have been working to make the Department of Psychiatry as welcoming and inclusive as possible. Some of the steps we have taken to improve our working culture include: ➡️ introducing an application process for open-ended contracts to help address some of the uncertainty of fixed term contracts. ➡️ holding PI (Principal Investigator) lunches to encourage senior leaders to discuss key issues, share best practice and learn from each other. ➡️ introduced termly People and Culture themes to enable us to be more strategic and focused on key areas. After having our Athena Swan Silver Award renewed this year, as we head into 2025 we will be starting to implement and deliver on our future action plan. Read more about our People and Culture highlights from the past year from our Associate Head of Department for People and Culture Professor Catherine Harmer 👇 https://lnkd.in/esGmwZe5

Dr. Monica Swahn and colleagues have published a pivotal study in Health Promotion International addressing alcohol use disorders among healthcare professionals. The research highlights the high prevalence of these disorders, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasizes their impact on productivity, health, and patient care quality. The study calls for urgent interventions, including evidence-based training, organizational support, and integration of alcohol use screening and treatment into primary healthcare and psychiatry services. It also identifies a significant gap in research from low- and middle-income countries. These findings underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to improve workforce well-being and ensure the delivery of high-quality care. It was great to connect with and hear from old friends and new at the Horizons Business Forum last week. The start of the year has been a busy one for psychiatry, with advances made in driving potential future access to novel mental health treatments, and it was good to talk through what this means for the industry moving forward. One of the key topics of discussion was the new category III CPT codes, which were made live this year, and it was great to see recognition that they represent a critical component of the reimbursement framework for HCPs should psychedelic treatments be approved. This was particularly timely as last week also saw the publication of new peer reviewed guidance (see link in first comment) on the use of these codes in psychedelic treatments. This guidance directs the health care industry to proactively support access through specific current use cases for the new codes. Whilst we urgently develop new treatments for those living with serious mental illness, we also need to find ways to ensure broad and equitable access to them in the future, and category III CPT codes are a positive step in making this happen.
