🌎🦋Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay! One day to celebrate, 365 days to act! 📅 🏞 This year’s theme is land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. 👩🌾As highlighted by #SDG15 ‘Life on Land’, healthy land is vital to support ecosystems, agriculture and communities. Yet, according to the UN Environment Programme, 2 billion hectares of land is degraded, affecting more than 3 billion people. 🌳As stewards of the more than 1 bn hectares of the world’s forests globally, the forest sector plays a critical role in maintaining and enhancing land and ecosystems. In 2023, members of WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development's Forest Solutions Group reported: ➡24% of their land was set aside primarily for nature conservation or restoration, representing an area of 5 million hectares, equivalent to 7 million soccer fields ⚽ 🌱 FSG’s Nature Positive Roadmap highlights a couple of examples of restoration practices from members: ◾ HVP Plantation, a timberland management entity of Manulife Investment Management, worked in collaboration with local partners to help regenerate areas of warm temperate rainforest in Australia, adjacent to its productive forests. In addition to natural regeneration, the effort included removal of alien species and replanting of 11,000 native rainforest canopy trees. ◾ International Paper partnered with WWF to restore degraded forests in the Mogi Guaçu watershed in Brazil, helping regulate soil erosion, filtering out pollutants, maintaining watershed stability, and creating corridors for wildlife. Reforestation of Brazil's, Paraguay's and Argentina's Atlantic Forest - A UN World Restoration Flagship. The Atlantic Forest, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, has suffered extensive degradation due to human activities. Here’s how various organizations are collaborating to breathe new life into this vital ecosystem: The Necessity: Centuries of deforestation for agriculture, urban development, and industry have heavily degraded the Atlantic Forest. Restoring it is crucial to preserve its biodiversity, enhance carbon sequestration, and stabilize climatic conditions. Collaborative Initiatives: Spearheaded by the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact (founded in 2009), efforts aim to restore 15 million hectares across Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay by 2050. It receives support from 300+ partners, including Brazilian Society for Ecological Restoration, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, The Nature Conservancy in Brazil, World Resources Institute Brazil, World Wide Fund Brazil, WWF Paraguay, Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina and many other international and local organizations. Strategic Decision-Making: Restoration sites are carefully selected based on ecological needs, using advanced mapping and satellite data to ensure optimal impact. Ecological Impact: The focus is on areas that are ecologically sensitive, such as river basins and fragmented landscapes, to maximize biodiversity and environmental benefits. Methodology and Funding: Efforts are supported by a combination of natural regeneration and active reforestation, with funds coming from corporate sponsors, government initiatives, and international donors. Achievements So Far: There’s been significant progress with millions of hectares showing signs of regeneration, gaining global recognition, including designation as a UN World Restoration Flagship. Ongoing Challenges: The main hurdles include urban expansion, agricultural conversion, and climate impacts, with future steps focusing on expanding restoration scale and improving legal protections. Looking Ahead: The goal is set for 2050, but given the extensive degradation and ongoing pressures, efforts will likely continue beyond this target. The revival of the Atlantic Forest is a crucial endeavor for the health of our planet, preserving unique biodiversity and fostering ecological balance. #NatureRestoration #Reforestation #Sustainability #AtlanticForest #Conservation #Biodiversity Image: Sarah Brown for Mongabay. https://lnkd.in/djyuHgHB

Life on land : " Protecting the foundation of our planet" Earth life is the cornerstone of our planet’s ecosystem and the key to human survival. Earth’s ecosystems, ranging from forests and grasslands to deserts and wetlands, provide vital resources such as food, water and oxygen that support countless species and maintain environmental balance, however they are on the verge of extinction. Deforestation, habitat destruction, climate change and pollution are some of the challenges that threaten life on earth. Forests covering 31% of the land area are being cleared at an alarming rate for agricultural and urban development, causing habitat loss and ecological degradation Land degradation and desertification cause agricultural crops and further jeopardizes safe water supplies, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Sustainable practices such as reforestation, wildlife conservation and appropriate land use planning are crucial to protect life on earth. Government, organizations and individuals need to work together to reduce deforestation, promote biodiversity and restore degraded ecosystems. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 emphasizes the importance of conserving earth’s biodiversity and halting biodiversity loss. conclusion Protecting life on earth is essential to the health of our planet and future generations. By prioritizing conservation and sustainable practices, we can ensure that the Earth remains a thriving home for all species. Now let’s work to protect and restore our planet’s beautiful terrestrial heritage. blog link : https://lnkd.in/gt5j7qbB

How to grow forests and climate hope as a business 🌳 👇 The end of the financial year is a great time to consider supporting impactful environmental initiatives. Greenfleet is an environmental not-for-profit organisation that has delivered climate action for over 25 years. Greenfleet recently met with Catalyser to discuss their goals and current initiatives. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gsBbzcNU - Greenfleet's impressive work speaks for itself: Over 10.8 million trees planted across Australia and New Zealand, creating 550 native forests! 🌳 - Carbon Removal: These legally protected forests will absorb 5 million tonnes of carbon throughout their lifetime. This is equivalent to removing approximately 1.2 million average vehicles from Australia’s roads for a whole year! 🚗 - Habitat Restoration: Greenfleet's forests create and extend protected habitats for Australia’s wildlife, including koalas and many endangered species. 🐨 - Community Engagement: Greenfleet engages with local communities, educating them about the importance of reforestation and climate action. In 2023, they strengthened ties with Indigenous communities, delivered the Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Kabi Kabi in Noosa, engaged with the Boon Wurrung in South Gippsland, and advanced their Reconciliation Action Plan. 👩🏫 In the upcoming year, Greenfleet plans to expand reforestation projects in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and New Zealand, focusing on creating habitats for endangered species and restoring vital ecosystems. Supporting their work is easy - Businesses can purchase a Prezzee Give Back Card and directly fund Greenfleet's climate efforts. 🙌 Ready to be part of the solution? *A project on Wetland Conservation* I originally completed this project as an assignment, but I wanted to share it here to spread awareness and convey the importance of saving our environment. 🌍🌿 Wetlands: A wetland is a type of natural area that is always or often covered with shallow water. It's like a mix between a pond and dry land, where plants and animals specially adapted to wet conditions live. Wetlands like the Mer Bleue Bog are vital to our environment, providing numerous ecological, social, and economic benefits. Through this project, I have gained key insights into the importance of conserving these precious ecosystems: 🔹 Biodiversity Hotspots: Wetlands support a wide variety of plant and animal species, including several endangered species. 🔹 Carbon Sequestration: Peatlands like Mer Bleue play a crucial role in capturing carbon, helping to mitigate climate change. 🔹 Natural Water Management: Wetlands aid in flood control, water purification, and maintaining hydrological balance. 🔹 Recreational & Educational Value: They offer opportunities for recreation, education, and tourism, enhancing community well-being and awareness. However, wetlands face threats from human activities, pollution, urban development, and climate change. It's imperative that we prioritize their protection and sustainable management to ensure these ecosystems continue to thrive. As our professor Bernadette Charpentier says "Small contributions from each person can create a significant impact." So let's work together towards a greener, more sustainable future! 🌱💧✨ #EnvironmentalConservation #Sustainability #WetlandProtection #MerBleueBog #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #GreenFuture #EcologicalBalance #ConservationEfforts #SustainableDevelopment
