Did you know we measure trees much like we measure humans for sewing clothes? Ever wondered how we measure trees? It all starts with DBH (Diameter at Breast Height), typically measured at 1.3 meters above ground level. This standardized method helps ensure consistent data collection across studies and locations. 📏 Once we have the DBH, we can calculate the tree's basal area and estimate its volume, which are crucial for forest management and ecological research. But it doesn't stop there! 🔍 To get a more comprehensive understanding, we measure the diameter at the base and at the top of the tree. This provides insights into its growth patterns and structural stability. 🛠️ Various instruments are used for accurate measurements, including diameter tapes, calipers, and laser rangefinders. These tools allow us to gather precise data essential for sustainable forestry practices and environmental conservation. 🌿 Next time you stroll through a forest, take a moment to appreciate the science behind these towering giants and the meticulous methods used to understand and protect them . #Forestry #TreeMeasurement #Ecology #Conservation #Science #linkedln

🌲 Happy National Forest Week! This year's theme, Two-Eyed Seeing, emphasizes the importance of integrating Traditional Knowledge with Western Science for sustainable forest management. By considering both perspectives, we can ensure the sustainable management of our forests for future generations. GIS is a powerful tool that helps make this collaboration possible. One way is through land-use planning, which considers Indigenous and biodiversity values in addition to economic opportunities. By leveraging GIS for informed decision-making, we can successfully manage our forests if we approach planning with a focus on tradition and technology. #NationalForestWeek #TwoEyedSeeing #GIS #Sustinability #Forestry #LandUsePlanning #IndigenousKnowledge #ForestManagement

The US National Interagency Fire Center estimates that between 80 to 87 % of all forest fires in United States are caused by humans (i.e., not from lightning). Of course, the absolute number will vary regionally and as a function of interannual (e.g., ENSO) and decadal (e.g., Pacific Decadal Oscillation or PDO) time scales as soil moisture content naturally varies over the Seasonal Cycle. Sigh.......sometimes it is just too easy rebutting climate disinformation. https://lnkd.in/gb5u5V_j #climatescience #forestry #forestmanagement #forestfires #environmentalscience #naturalresourcemanagement #abpoli #cdnpoli #science #sciencecommunication #scienceeducation #oilandgas #oilandgasindustry #albertastrong #albertaenergy #canadianenergy #softwood

Scientists Discover Forests That May Resist Climate Change Researchers discovered forests with cold-air pooling, where colder air settles in valleys, reversing typical temperature patterns. These areas could protect cold-adapted species from climate change, serving as refuges and aiding conservation efforts. The study emphasizes the importance of such forests for species adaptation and carbon storage. https://buff.ly/3Lu7sjZ via @university-of-vermont #PlantScience #PlantSci #ClimateChange #Forest #Forestry #Science #Plants #Trees Image: Cold-air pooling is a phenomenon where cold air drops from mountaintops into valleys below.
