🌍 Celebrating World Environment Day: The Role of Traceability in Sustainable Cosmetics As we mark World Environment Day, it's crucial to highlight the steps the cosmetics industry is taking to boost sustainability and transparency. The launch of the Traceability Alliance for Sustainable Cosmetics (TRASCE), led by Chanel in 2024, exemplifies this effort. We caught up with Rodney Muriuki and Norbert Binot from Farmforce who work with customers—from brands to processors, manufacturers, and producers—to enhance transparency throughout their supply chains. Their core mission is to support all these actors, ensuring their products are traceable and that they practice sustainability at every step. Rodney and Norbert emphasise that sustainability starts with traceability. Whether driven by passion or compliance, integrating these practices is key to a better future for both the industry and the planet. We've seen positive changes: small companies focusing on organic products, farmer wellbeing, and soil protection. These brands are reaching out to us for help, and we're delighted to support them. We are seeing a growing number of ethical labels and sustainability schemes in the cosmetics industry.   Our research shows that natural & organic labels continue to lead, having the largest number of certified product sales. However, vegan labels have shown the highest increase in recent years. There are significant variations between geographic regions. Understanding the Green Impact Index: Key Insights At the recent in-cosmetics Global event, Clément Azam, CSR & Sustainable Development Manager at Pierre Fabre Group, and Marie Marache, Mission & Impact Director at Groupe Rocher, provided valuable insights into the Green Impact Index methodology at the Sustainability Zone Theatre. Marie Marache explained that the index score is determined by an 80% focus on environmental impact and a 20% focus on societal impact. This framework helps address consumer concerns and comply with increasing regulations, offering a transparent and reliable way to measure cosmetic products' environmental and societal impact. The Green Impact Index represents a significant step towards greater transparency and accountability in the cosmetics industry. Many skin care products list ingredients as extracts from coffee grounds, seeds, kernels, skins and pulp. These ingredients can often be sourced through local businesses (food and juice industries, restaurants, vineyards), which will be happy to share their waste products.
