I am deeply saddened to learn about the closing of Loli Beauty, a champion of sustainable beauty that I've admired and followed since 2019. Their commitment to sustainability has set a standard in our industry, highlighting how vital and yet challenging it is to maintain a mission-aligned business amidst wider market dynamics. The struggles faced by Loli Beauty echo a broader issue in our industry: the difficulty of educating consumers on the importance of sustainability. As Loli’s founder pointed out, the allure of trends, influenced by social media and endorsements, often overshadows the crucial sustainability filter we strive to promote. This is a sentiment I resonate with strongly as I continue my journey in advocating for sustainable bodycare. It's a tough path, and while some are beginning to embrace this change, much more work lies ahead in shifting mindsets towards more sustainable choices. New research from the British Beauty Council and The Professional Beauty Group shows that two thirds (65%) of beauty professionals are unaware of any organisations or initiatives supporting waste reduction & sustainability in the professional beauty industry. This is a big concern, considering the industry produces an astounding 99,000 tonnes of waste annually, most of which ends up in landfill 😲 The good news - almost all (95%) of those working in the industry think about the environmental impact of their work and a whopping 97% think it is important for hair and beauty professionals to be actively involved in waste reduction efforts. Despite this, nearly two thirds (60%) have received little or no training in sustainability, but four fifths (81%) would be interested in doing so. A similar number (84%) are open to exploring new ways to make a positive impact in terms of reducing waste at their salon.
