Fixture Difficulty Schedules Now Live! You can now view fixture difficulty schedules for the top 5 European leagues on my site. 🏆 🇪🇸 La Liga Predictions show in the image Initially, I tried applying a uniform model for predicting outcomes across all leagues, but this led to lower-quality predictions. So, I’ve now tailored a separate model for each league, as the factors influencing performance vary significantly between competitions. The model starts by predicting the number of goals each team is expected to score in an upcoming fixture. Then, a Poisson distribution is applied to estimate the probability of each possible match outcome (Home Win, Draw, Away Win) based on predicted xG (expected goals). In testing, the Mean Squared Error (MSE) of predicted goals across the leagues ranged between 0.65 and 0.85. If this level of accuracy can be maintained moving forward, I’ll be pleased with the results. There are still a few anomalies that I’m ironing out, but overall, I’m happy with the model’s current output. 🇫🇷 Check out Ligue 1 predictions here: https://lnkd.in/e72-dUy6 #datascience #sportsanalytics

Today's take home message - when testing speed stick to one method, don't chop and change! I had 15 rugby players run 20m using timing gates (2.89s ± 0.08), and the 1080 Sprint (3.25s ± 0.10), with the difference between the two sprint times being significant (p < 0.001). Speed gates were on avereage 0.37 seconds faster (95%CI: -0.40 to -0.33). And why was this? The timing trigger/initiation of the sprint on the 1080 is more realiable and repeatable as the clock starts when the cord moves faster than 0.2 m/s. A paper by Dr Jonathon Weakley et al titled "Comparison of Sprint Timing Methods on Performance, and Displacement and Velocity at Timing Initiation" used speed gates and compared different sprint timing methods on sprint time. They found that comparisons between sprints that use different timing methods are not possible (trivial to very large differences depnding on the set up). So whilst the timing gates may make my athletes seem faster, i'll stick with the 1080 as I find it more sensitive to real performance changes.
