Your Weekly Tip from a Recruiter: Your First GC Position Looking for your first GC role? Consider a private equity owned company. PE firms routinely encourage their portfolio companies to bring on their first GC. Depending on the company’s exit strategy, these roles may not require public company experience and are a great training ground for first time GCs. You will likely get to build a legal function and perhaps even a team gaining valuable GC generalist experience that will set you up for your next GC role. As most PE owned companies have a 5-7 year cycle these days (up from 3-5), you will gain the experience of taking the company through an exit (whether that is a sale or IPO) and potentially see an upside on your equity. You can then parlay this experience into a GC role at a larger private or publicly traded company or move on to another portfolio company owned by the same or another PE firm. Any questions, please reach out.

Fool·ish·ness (noun) /ˈfo͞oliSHnəs/ Lack of good sense or judgment; stupidity. Example: A multi-million dollar company strives to hire qualified staff. They insist on MBAs for leaders. The technical staff needs to have completed an IT bachelors degree and earned advanced certifications. Both must have significant and relevant work experience. Any minor changes in the business strategic direction or supporting technical systems involve months of planning meetings, comprehensive project management, and well planned back-out contingency plans for the migration. But when required to put together a Business Continuity Plan and IT Disaster Recovery Plan and strategies, where all departments will be displaced with zero advanced notice and no ability to fail-back, they hire a low-low bid H-1B staffed startup company or the vice president’s nephew as a summer intern who just complete his freshman year in business studies at the local community college. His last job involved saying the words, “Would you like fries with that?” 😖

Here's something interesting I read today: Any idea how many ETFs come to market each month? According to Morningstar, in 2024, it has averaged 50 per month. How to Impress a Recruiter at a Private Equity Firm? Imagine your boss is evaluating a potential investment. A client suggests firm X or Y, but your boss believes firm Z might be a better option. He asks you, “What indicators should I use to convince the client that firm Z is the better choice?” There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here, but your ability to explain your reasoning matters more than the specific metrics you mention. To stand out in a private equity interview, show intelligence and a deep understanding of the industry. Don’t just rattle off basic definitions like "What is an LBO?" Anyone can memorize that. Instead, demonstrate critical thinking: Why would you choose private equity over M&A? Why would a firm want to sell itself? Recruiters understand you’re not expected to know everything, especially for an entry-level role. But they do want to see genuine interest and initiative. Read up on well-known private equity deals from the past decade. Be prepared to discuss trends, challenges, and where you think the industry is headed over the next 10 years. And, when asked why you want to work in private equity, have a thoughtful, well-reasoned answer. It should reflect your passion, your long-term career vision, and why PE specifically excites you. #CainMann #careeradvice #PE
