"If humans are imperfect beings, the architecture we make should reflect that imperfection, those details, those vestiges of irregularities that give it character and turn it into a craft." Ángel Bolaños Méndez, alumnus of the course in Architecture for Humanity, had the opportunity to interview José Selgas and Lucia Cano, founders of selgascano, architectural office based in Madrid. ✏️Read the article on the Students’ Blog: https://lnkd.in/dE7v5z_N #yac #yacademy #studentsblog

KOPERVIK SKOLE: RED & BLUED Sharing with you this moody shot from a project of our friends at Holar. The building was designed as a part of an architectural competition for a Skole in Kopervik, Norway. Holar has built over 40 schools so they have in their DNA the perfect receipt for designing the modern school that handles the pedagogy of the future. A successful school project is a complex composition of different needs and wishes and at the same time it is an exercise of in-site development and building identity through architecture. In this case we have worked with this last concept of how the building works with the environment. How not to do it when you are surrounded by such a evocative landscape? #thisisbtb #beautyandthebit #architecturalvisualization #archviz #artdirection #conceptart #lookdevelopment #mattepainting #virtualphotography

The making of Mexico City: "As a coda, SMA’s work itself could be seen as a synecdoche of the city. It has woven through the urban form for almost 100 years as it has evolved into one of today’s archetypal mega-cities. Over that period SMA have evolved from sophisticated modernist architects to imaginative designers and developers, intimately interested in the commercial, social, cultural and religious life of the city where they are based." Ever consider what architecture and building design might look like when informed by planetary boundaries? A cool little exhibit put on by the Royal Danish Academy explores how the architecture and design of the future can co-exist with a balanced planet. The focal point of the 'Planetary Boundaries – Rethinking Architecture and Design' exhibition is to perceive the world from a fresh perspective, seeking an approach to architecture and design disciplines that revolves around planetary well-being and the state of the global environment. This exhibition, which is free of charge, allows users to experience 25 selected projects which – from an academic architectural or design perspective – ponder the potential for innovative design, building materials and types of dwellings with wide-ranging aesthetics – but a tiny planetary footprint. Each of the 25 projects exhibited considers one or more of the nine planetary boundary parameters. So, if you happen to be in Copenhagen sometime before April 5th, you might want to give it a look-see! I am excited to have received a First in Course Award for ARCHHTC 700: Pacific Architecture, a paper I took in semester two of my M.Arch(prof) in 2023. I enjoyed writing a research paper in response to my inquiry: ‘How did the Māori architecture vernacular evolve in correlation with religio-political movements responding to the European Colonisation of Aotearoa in 1840, and to what extent is this considered hybrid architecture?’ Three case studies were explored, buildings which at face value appear to stray from the traditional pre-colonial vernacular. The Eripitana Meeting House (1884) of the Ringatū movement, Te Whiti’s Bank (1885) of Parihaka, and Rātana Temple (1925) of the Rātana movement; in attempt to uncover the complex interplay of cultural adaptation, forces and responses which led to architectural decisions made by Māori in hopes of preserving their land and culture. I found that the vernacular did evolve, in that specific Western elements were selectively adopted by Māori to strengthen their counter-colonial response, fortifying their cultural identity.
