As we embark on the YALI Africa 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we must reflect on the significance of this initiative. Violence against women and girls is a global epidemic affecting millions and cutting across cultures economies and communities. Running from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10th (Human Rights Day), this campaign urges us to raise awareness, promote education, and take action. It calls for open discussions, challenging harmful norms, and supporting survivors. I believe everyone deserves to live free from violence and fear. It’s vital to amplify affected voices and advocate for policies that protect women and girls. Together, we can ensure safety and respect become fundamental rights for all. Let’s unite, share resources, and commit to this essential movement. Every action brings us closer to ending violence against women and girls. #YALI16DaysOfActivism #EndViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls #HumanRightsForAll

During these 16 days of activism, our community facilitators in the project "USAID Dufatanye Urumuri" are leveraging the trust built within the community to educate on the importance of rejecting gender-based violence, promoting complementarity in family relationships, and fostering a peaceful environment that promotes economic development in households. BÆREKRAFTSUKA 2024 ✨ "Civil society in Kenya engages in radical and transformative activism, human rights advocacy and social accountability for county and national governments, promoting good governance that is essential to achieving the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. We collaborate with social movements to challenge political processes, informal powers and social norms, and include historically marginalized groups promoting the concept of the 2030 Agenda to 'leave no one behind'. We organize communities to advance civic spaces and people’s power with the bigger aim of transforming structures that violate human rights. We champion a system that values human rights and social justice." Hallima Nyota, Executive Director of Rising to Greatness Organization #Bærekraftsuka 🌍 🌎 🌏

How are Civil society #movements reshaping #peace and #security in Myanmar? Conflict exacerbates pre-existing inequalities, which has had significant impact on #women and girl’s access to basic rights. WROs and #WLOs have found ways to fill the gaps left by the international actors, by finding alternative solutions to respond to the needs of communities and advocate for peace, via community-led initiatives and international advocacy 1. The #WROs we spoke called the ‘sisterhood approach’, emphasising that women’s rights and women led organisations at all levels come together to respond to the gendered impacts of conflict, which otherwise are left unaddressed 2. Women leaders have also been at the forefront of women’s protection approaches. Their activities range from awareness-raising on the rights of women and girls, to training on #mentalhealth services and counselling for survivors. Celebrating #HumanRightsDefendersDay Today, we honor the incredible resilience, courage, and dedication of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Southern Africa and worldwide. These champions of justice often face significant risks—threats, persecution, and even violence—yet they persist. Their work protects human dignity, promotes equality, and defends freedoms we hold dear. Our Chairperson, Prof. Adriano Nuvunga, has shared a heartfelt message for HRDs in Southern Africa, celebrating their bravery and calling for ongoing solidarity and support. Let’s continue to stand with HRDs, amplify their voices, and ensure their protection. Together, we can help create a world where justice and human rights are non-negotiable. #HumanRightsDefendersDay #HRDs #JusticeForAll #StandUp4HumanRights

#AfricanFutures: Did you know? 🔴 In Kenya, 3 out of 4 girls experience female genital mutilation (FGM) before the age of 14, according to UNICEF (based on data from the annual report for 2021). The emancipation of women & girls everywhere is of vital importance. Practices such as FGM are not aligned with feminism. In fact, FGM today is recognised as a practice that violates a number of international human rights laws❗ That is why Kenya 🇰🇪 has taken such a tough stance against it. The East African country has some of the most progressive legislation around the harmful practice. It has made 12 commitments to end all forms of GBV and FGM by 2026 👏.
