Forrest Lang, author of Angel Blue Book, veteran, and former foster youth shares this incredible story of reuniting with the brother and family he didn’t know that he had. National Reunification Month, observed annually in June, recognizes the people and ongoing efforts around the country that help families stay together. It is also a time to recommit to strengthening, improving, and increasing those efforts all year long. This year’s theme, "Reunification: Shifting Power and Reconnecting Families All Year Long," focuses on: 1) When children cannot safely remain with their parents and need to enter foster care, reunifying them with family remains the primary goal. 2) Authentic, equitable family engagement and integrating the voice of children, youth, and families into the case planning and court processes. 3) Enhancing birth parent-foster parent partnerships to improve the foster care experience for children, youth, and parents when a child’s removal from the home is necessary and to support reunification. At Connect Our Kids we’re devoted to doing all in our power to give social workers the tools they need to both reunify families and discover and engage the extended family members that were not previously locatable. May is Foster Care Awareness Month - At Prevention Now we understand the added vulnerabilities that children in the foster care system face, including the disproportionate chances of being approached by a human trafficker. Here are some things to know about foster care from www.childwelfare.gov ❤️ There are over 365,000 children and youth in foster care. ❤️ Approximately 18,500 youth are emancipated from foster care without a permanent family. ❤️ In 2021, 77 percent of eligible youth in foster care, ages 14–21 years old, left care without receiving the federally funded services necessary to prepare them for adulthood and independent living. Fostering: The Positive Impact on a Child's Life 🌟 Fostering has a profound, life-changing effect on children in need. Every child deserves a stable, loving environment, but for the 60,000 children in care in the UK (as of 2023), this isn't always the case. Becoming a foster parent can change that. Research shows that children in foster care benefit greatly from supportive families. 70% of children in stable foster placements see improved academic performance and emotional well-being. May is National Foster Care Month (NFCM). There are more than 391,000 children and youth in foster care. This year’s NFCM theme—“Engaging Youth. Building Supports. Strengthening Opportunities.”—shines a light on how we can support the roughly 20,000 young people who transition out of the foster care system each year without a permanent family. 1 TO 10 CHILDREN IN THE WORLD NEED YOU AND ARE WAITING FOR YOU More than 700,000 children in WORLD are permanently and legally separated from their biological parents and seeking a new family to call their own. Adoption is a social, emotional, and legal process through which children become full and permanent members of another family, giving the new parent(s) the same rights and obligations as biological parents. Adoption is also multifaceted, occurring in different ways to meet the specific needs of children. For example, kinship adoption by blood relatives or fictive kin who have an emotional connection with the child is one way for Virginia’s children to stay connected to their family, culture and traditions. Foster parents in Virginia also often become forever families to children and have adopted over 60% of our youth in foster care. In Chance Orphanage , we prioritize reunifying children with their families whenever possible, and finding kinship caregivers or new, loving families for children when reunification is not possible. Again,We ask that you consider getting curious – about everything you know or think you know about adopting a child (or children!). Consider opening your heart and home to a child. We recently conducted research with 2005 adults, asking them if they thought there were any barriers to becoming a foster carer. When individuals embark on their fostering journeys, one of their primary concerns is often the process itself and its potential intrusiveness. Although it might feel intrusive, our team ensures that you are comfortable every step of the way. By the time our carers reach their panel, they often express that the experience wasn't as daunting as anticipated.
