𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫 “𝐠𝐢𝐠 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲” 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭? A gig economy marketplace needs 3 key elements to thrive: 1) healthy demand 2) commensurate supply and 3) appropriate technology & tools to connect 1 & 2. In particular, 3 needs to enable proper matching of demand with supply, tracking progress of activities, and deliver seamless payments - all in a secure and safe fashion. Over the last 10-15 years these 3 elements have reached a tipping point for many types of “gigs”. Food delivery, car rides, babysitting, and even celebrity hires (I see you Cameo) - are just a few examples. For knowledge workers, these elements were not quite there yet. However, the landscape over the last 2 years has changed significantly in the tech industry. On the demand side - the rising cost of capital, wall street/VC pressures for profitable growth and geo-political uncertainty make temporary workers more attractive for companies, creating new demand for these “gig” knowledge workers. On the supply side - the massive tech layoffs (hundreds of thousands just in 2022-23) has created a significant surge in qualified knowledge workers. Many tired of corporate bureaucracy are eager to do solopreneur gigs. Lastly on the tech/tools side - broad access to GenAI tools make it easier for both companies and solopreneurs to do more with less - making the solopreneur gig more accessible than ever. Not to mention no-code tools that enable website creation and workflow automation easier. Based on my conversations, many doing consulting or fractional work are actually enjoying the flexibility and ability to create their own brand. And for the companies, they are benefiting from cost efficiency, and broad base market knowledge and skills. Not to mention the optionality and risk reduction both sides can enjoy. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬: Is this a temporary shift in the market while adjustments happen? Will the companies start to hire back this independent talent base in 1-2 years again? Will this talent shift to full time roles to other industries? Or will independent workers become mini-brands developing deep expertise in different parts of the value stack?
