The Multifaceted Designer or Exploited Employee? WE ARE HIRING ! Lately, I've observed an alarming trend in the fashion industry: job descriptions for fashion designers that seem more like a wish list for a superhero rather than a realistic portrayal of a single role. Employers are looking for candidates who can do everything from designing, pattern making, stitching, embroidery, and print development to customer care, production, and even buyer handling. They expect a jack-of-all-trades, master of all. What's even more disturbing is the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) requirement for the candidate to be unmarried and female, with an expectation to "entertain" the boss or seniors. This kind of sexism and exploitation has no place in any industry, let alone one that prides itself on creativity and innovation. As professionals, we need to stand up against such unethical hiring practices. A role should be about skills and passion, not about personal characteristics or an individual's willingness to compromise their dignity. The fashion industry needs to do better.
