Each year to acknowledge R U OK day, our leaders and the wonderful Katherine Newton invite us to a webinar, to share with us the importance of checking in with each other and share practical advice on building a culture of care, showing us all that it’s okay to reach out and offer support. #RUOKDay2024 is this Thursday (12 Sep). But ANY day is the day to check in with those we care about and ask, ‘are you OK?’. If you’re not sure how to start the conversation, try these 4️⃣ steps. 1️⃣ Ask R U OK? 2️⃣ Listen 3️⃣ Encourage action 4️⃣ Check in
For the fourth consecutive year, Dare will be rolling out special limited-edition labels to inspire drinkers to check in with mates and loved ones and ask, ‘RUOK?’. The RUOK? message will be featured on the front of the Dare packs in the lead-up to R U OK? Day on Thursday, 12 September, and the back of the pack will show steps for having a conversation with a mate as well as a QR code linking to further information. As Australia’s leading iced coffee brand, Dare has the opportunity to reach millions of Australians and remind them to check in on their friends, family and colleagues who may be struggling. Dare has always been known for saying ‘A Dare Fix’ll Fix It’, but the truth is, a Dare fix can’t fix many of life’s challenges. Thankfully, a conversation could. All Aussies will be able to find the limited-edition bottles in store until the middle of September 2024.

Notes of a Waitress (Pt. 60): Mercy, Grace, Patience, Charity I think this is what writers do. Conjuring something from nothing. Or at least seemingly nothing. It's Monday morning and I haven't a single word written about all of last week. It was a very quiet week. Stuart reckons it's because #tax season has everyone licking their wounds. Be that as it may, I have a deceiving tendency to feel like the level of busyness in the #restaurant is my to do. When it's pumping - my to do. When it's dead - my to do. Often I have to check myself for thinking this way because not all of everything depends on me, and it's a #mindset that can easily fool with one's emotions. And speaking of emotions... I certainly had them last week. #Patience is patient work. Charity is making #progress but there are still things that I have such a hard time not getting heavily frustrated and annoyed about. I was in great distress, complained about it, Stuart said to hand it over (to God), I did, and then I had an epiphany and cried. Now I need to put my epiphany into action and be patient. Stuart always says, "Manage the difference, not the person." I also had a fight with one of the guys in the kitchen. Only after I ordered three cowboy butters did they inform me that we only had two in stock. 😤 I flipped. I mean, they know I sell plenty of these on a daily basis. I might've gone a little overboard though and have some amends to make today. All-in-all I think the highlight(s) of my week was when I got to treat two local border collies to some bones. May this week be more #patient than last. 🙏And perhaps a little more #demure. Lol 🤓 PS. Here's a beautiful #frontofhouse team photo we took the week before last. #stellenbosch #restaurant #waitress #steak #wine #colleagues #growth #leadership #management #relationships

A few things I've become more grateful for from having volunteered at a local food bank. 1). Having a can opener is a luxury. 2). Being able to keep foods cold or heat up meals makes meal prep so much easier. 3). Salt, pepper and condiments can take your meals to the next level. 4.) Automobiles are not the best place to get a good night's rest. Summary: Wealth is not based on having the most, it's all about needing the least.

My Christmas gift to you all 🎁💝 If you are bored when alone. Then you are in bad company. Change it. Time is ticking away. But the clock is not ticking away. Time in our life is ticking away. Time in our most precious life. Spend this festive season. Recognising the enhanced value of human connection. The privilege of family. Be they your blood or my ‘blud’. The privilege of warmth. The privilege of food. The privilege of peace. The privilege of presents. Even if we are not present. So many will spend this festive season alone. Cold and hungry. Find some moments to be charitable to others. Make amends with neighbours be they next door or far away. Forgive those that may have harmed you. Do not carry their actions or the hurt any further. Cherish everything. The pain, the misery, the joy, the happiness of living. All of these are emotions of a being human. Whether pleasant or unpleasant. Only we can choose internally how we experience these. Not the experience itself. Retain a heart of extreme integrity. Be a symbol of excellence for those around you. Shine as bright as that great North Star 🌟. And have yourselves a very Merry Christmas. We will thrive in 2025. With Love Over Fear 🙏🏽💜 EmpowerAbility

While you’re enjoying the festive season, here’s some reminders on how to avoid drink spiking. Buy your own drinks: Keep control of what you consume by purchasing your own drinks and watching them being prepared. Don’t leave your drink unattended: Whether you're dancing or stepping away for a moment, always keep an eye on your drink. If you must leave it, ask a trusted friend to watch it for you. Avoid accepting drinks from strangers: Politely decline drinks from people you don’t know well. If someone offers you a drink, accompany them to the bar and get it directly from the bartender. Trust your instincts: Stay aware of what's happening around you. Be cautious if someone seems overly eager to buy you drinks or gets too friendly too quickly. If your drink tastes or looks odd, don’t consume it. Discard it and alert venue staff if necessary. Look out for each other: When out with friends, keep an eye on one another. If someone starts feeling unwell or disoriented, seek help immediately. Know how to ask for help : If you feel unsafe or suspect your drink has been spiked, don’t hesitate to approach venue staff and “Ask for Angela.” This signals that you need assistance. Stay vigilant and enjoy your night out safely! As we come together to celebrate Independence Day, let's also prioritize our health and safety. Enjoying the festivities doesn't mean we should overlook the importance of public health. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Practice Sun Safety: Use sunscreen, wear hats, and seek shade to protect against UV rays. Fireworks Safety: Handle fireworks responsibly and supervise children to prevent injuries. Healthy Gatherings: If you're hosting or attending a gathering, consider food safety to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Food: Giving Thanks...to Whom? Growing up in an Irish Catholic household, our family grace was always, “Bless us, Oh Lord, for these gifts…” But as a mother to two thoughtful boys, I started to reflect on how that prayer felt out of place. I began to wonder what I truly wanted to instill in them about our relationship with food. Recognizing the Value of Food I want my boys to appreciate the significance of food. Many people don’t have the luxury of deciding what to eat for dinner or even if they’ll have dinner at all. I grew up hearing, “There are starving children in the world; finish your plate.” While that sentiment has faded, I want my boys to understand their privilege regarding food and to recognize that many struggle to access nourishing meals. I hope they will take action against food inequity whenever possible. Thank you for this food. Gratitude for Every Contributor It’s essential for my boys to express gratitude for every person involved in bringing food to our table. From farmers to truck drivers to grocery store employees, the list can be extensive! By reflecting on the countless individuals who contribute to the simple act of eating, they gain a deeper appreciation for each meal. As children, we explored this process in depth, and now that they are older, we acknowledge all who helped us receive this food. Thank you to everyone who made this meal possible. Awareness of Our Community I want my boys to recognize their connection to a larger community: a county, a country, a world. Our food choices can have ripple effects, influencing both people and the planet. It’s our responsibility to help others when they are in need and to make choices that are healthy for the Earth. May all eat well. Creating a world where everyone is nourished requires collective effort and awareness. It calls for moments of grace where we reflect on the bigger picture, fostering gratitude for what we have while motivating us to support others. Here’s our new grace as teenagers: “Thank you for this food. Thank you to everyone who helped bring it to us, and may all eat this well.” #gratitude #foodasmedicine #appreciatinglife #givingthanks
