Dreams without actions are like seeds never planted—they hold potential, but without effort, they will never grow. While imagination and vision are the sparks that ignite change, it is the actions we take that transform dreams into reality. In the context of our mission to reimagine and retell African stories, this principle is particularly pertinent. And this is where your support becomes indispensable. Carlton Aslett has kept himself busy over the past three decades leading many education and skills development projects worldwide. His career journey began with a focus on human development and includes major work in Malawi, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, Liberia, Viet Nam and Nigeria, focussing on public finance, human resources and education. ✈️ Today, as the Team Leader of the Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA) Financing Facility, Carlton’s juggling eight countries, managing a €120 million Challenge Fund that supports institutions in empowering youth, women and vulnerable groups across eight African countries. 🌍 SIFA, implemented by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) with German- and EU-backed financing, supports universities, polytechnics, TVET colleges and innovative organisations to bridge the gap between training and employment. 👩🏾🏫👩🏾🔧 “A lot of people are being trained but not for what industry requires,” the 52-year-old Team Leader says. “That actually is the overall goal of SIFA… how do we move from the lab to the training room to the workplace without this disconnect between the skills and competencies of those who graduate and the demands of industry.” The initiative’s competitive funding model, which grants up to €3 million, enables projects to meet local industry needs and national strategies. It has so far signed 30 contracts, with 20 more planned this year, ensuring careful scrutiny of projects and the impactful use of funds. 💶 Carlton's secret? ⚖️Striking a Balance between Funders' Interests and Community Needs. One of the biggest challenges in implementation of CLD is finding a balance between the funder's interests and the community's needs. 💸💰Most funders already have thematic areas which they commit their funds to. 🏘️🛖On the other hand, community needs are diverse and others may not always fall under the specified thematic areas of the funders. Therefore, humanitarian and Development organizations using the CLD model must be careful to not find themselves in a fix that would either result in the funders withdrawing their funding or the communities having projects that do not address their real needs. ✨Here are some of the tips to help in striking this balance: 💡Make your approaches and models clearly known to the funders from the beginning. Do not wait until you have received the funding and give excuses. 💡Work within the agreements you did set with the funders. If you agree on certain deliverables, please honor them. 💡Diversify your funding avenues to cover a wider area of key thematic areas covering the community needs. Additionally, leverage on partnerships and collaborations with other organizations. 💡Where you receive restricted funding, honour the funder and utilize the funds as agreed. 💡Leverage more on the unrestricted funding. 💡Do not try to play tricks with the funders of the the community. I used to hear stories about the kind of beliefs that some people have about Africa, and I always thought the stories were a bit exaggerated.   When I discovered Charity Ekezie's YouTube page, I marvelled at the power of propaganda that has shaped the misguided beliefs of some people about Africa over the past decades.   In another post, I'll share some of the most extreme comments I have seen on Charity's YouTube page—comments about real beliefs that some people have about Africa. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟲𝟯 This is a 50-year plan developed by the African Union as a blueprint and master plan for sustainable development and economic growth in Africa.   𝗪𝗵𝘆? The African Union identified the need to prioritise: (a) Inclusive Social and Economic Development (b) Continental and Regional Integration (c) Democratic Governance (d) Peace and Security among other issues aimed at repositioning Africa to become a dominant player in the global arena.   The Africa We Want is "an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the international arena."
