It's nearly Easter already! And the market is still trying to figure itself out.. Is it another '23 - circumspect and hard to execute - or a ramp up (albeit a slow one) with a better outlook for both investors and the bankers advising them? Aside from the ongoing activity in natural resources, infrastructure and energy transition, the market is still challenging. Good quality situations are hard to come by and to pin down, capital raising is a mixed bag, the bid-ask spread remains frustratingly wide and the macro picture uncertain. Hiring has reflected this so far, with a somewhat muted start to the year, despite optimism pre-Christmas that the year would be busy. There is still demand at junior & mid levels but senior roles remain a little harder to come by.  Larger, international platforms are cautious and finding it hard to justify hiring, aside from key replacements. Smaller and domestic firms are faring better, with less bureaucracy to navigate and the flexibility to run a counter-cyclical hiring strategy, whilst talent is available and open to ideas, following another year of low bonus outcomes. Despite this, we're pleased to report there are good quality career opportunities to be found for those looking for a change of focus, personnel, pace or sector. We're working with some interesting global and local brand names across a range of strategies, entrepreneurial build outs as well as more established businesses. Private equity and Investment Banking are facing a looming talent problem. Although AI is still in a more nascent stage, it's leading to many, but not all, entry-level investment banking jobs becoming unnecessary. Typically. Investment banks would recruit business analysts from college who would work for two years before going to private equity firms for another two years. Sometimes, those business analysts would stay at the investment banks. After four years, these analysts often attended business school and private equity as first-year Associates. They may return to the investment banking world or go to a hedge fund. If AI does the work that entry-level business analysts do, then Investment banks will need to hire fewer business analysts. That means the pool for private equity business analysts and higher-level investment banking jobs will be smaller. Unless these industries rethink what the ladder looks like to become Managing Directors and Senior Managing Directors, they may ultimately find that they have a talent crunch at the top. Quality at the top of the ladder may also decrease since less competition exists for those roles. Private equity and Investment banks need to evaluate the impact of AI on how they grow their talent and prepare the next generation of leaders. If they aren't strategic and purposeful in confronting this looming problem, they'll experience it later when they don't have enough qualified leaders.
