How much do workplace aesthetics matter to work performance? Maybe more than we're willing to admit. As a professor and researcher who focuses on the technical aspects of building design, I seldom hype the importance of aesthetics. But our latest study uncovered an exciting finding. We asked 614 hybrid workers to rank the importance of 10 workplace factors on their work performance. They ranked aesthetics almost last. BUT then we asked participants to assess each factor on a scale (1 = much better at home, to 5 = much better at the office), and separately, their overall work performance at home and the office (1 = terrible, to 5 = excellent). We then built a machine-learning model to predict their perceived work performance at either location based on all their survey answers. By far, the most significant predictor of a high work performance score? Adequate space and privacy? Nope. Noise level? Nada. Overall aesthetics of the workplace? Bingo. Is this mismatch a result of social desirability bias? In other words, are survey respondents answering in a way that's deemed socially acceptable, thus downplaying the importance of aesthetics? Are we blind to how much aesthetics matter to our work performance? And, importantly, should I go clean up my desk? https://lnkd.in/efRH9smx... Could these facts change your opinion on communal spaces in workplace design? 🤔 It's interesting how human brain works towards change and innovation. We naturally tend to put more focus and energy towards the negatives. Even though communal areas in the workplace is very much old news to most of us, most businesses (or the decision makers) are still focusing on the fact that a few sofas and a kitchen island is a distraction for the employees rather than an investment into their company culture and employee wellbeing. And the facts here speak for themselves 👇 1/4 of the world's population feel lonely and lack a sense of community around them, which then can lead to some very dark statistics.. I think a well designed workplace can really help to improve this situation with just a few easy improvements in the design of the space itself. 🌿🍃Nature's Blueprint: Elevating Workplace Well-being and Productivity through Biophilic Design🍃🌿☀️🌍 Environmental psychologist Judith Heerwagen stand as a testament to the profound impact our surroundings have on our psychological and physical well-being. Her research highlights a fundamental truth: **exposure to natural elements like daylight, plants, water features, and vistas of nature not only diminishes stress and enhances mood but also sharpens cognitive functioning. ** These benefits cascade into higher productivity and greater job satisfaction. Heerwagen's persuasive argument in “Design for Human Adaptation and Evolution” proposes that the most effective workplace designs mirror the natural environments that shaped human evolution. This approach, known as biophilic design, leverages our deep-seated affinity for nature, which historically promoted our ancestors' health and survival. The adoption of biophilic design principles in the workplace is far more than an aesthetic choice; it is a strategic investment in the health and efficiency of an organization. Among the myriad benefits are: 🌿Improved Mental Health 🧠🌿 Spaces that provide a connection to nature offer significant mental restoration, boosting focus and productivity. 🌿Boosted Creativity & Innovation💡 Environments that reflect the complexity of nature inspire creativity and innovation. 🌿🤝Enhanced Social Cohesion🤝🌿 Comfortable, natural spaces foster better communication and collaboration. 🌿Increased Job Satisfaction ☺️🌿 Nature-connected workspaces lead to higher morale and employee retention. 🌿 Reduced Absenteeism 🤒🌿 A healthier work environment means fewer sick days. 🌿Healthier Indoor Environment☀️🌿 Natural elements improve air quality and promote better overall health. 🌿Financial Savings 🫰🌿 The initial investment in biophilic design pays off in reduced healthcare costs and energy savings. 🌿Positive Corporate Image🌍🌿 Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and well-being attracts talent and clients. In a world where the average person spends a significant portion of their life at work, creating spaces that not only meet our needs but enhance our well-being and productivity is not just beneficial—it's essential. 🌿 Let's Make a Change Together🌿 Are you ready to transform your workspace into a bastion of well-being and productivity? It's time to embrace biophilic design not just as a trend, but as a principle for future-proofing our workplaces and our workforce. ➡️ **I encourage you to share **this post with your network and start a conversation about integrating nature into our workspaces. ➡️ **Reach out to professionals** who can help design and implement these principles in your workplace. Earlier this year, we sat down with Gareth van Zyl, Design Director at our sister company Sketch Studios, to explore a trending workplace discussion: how can we prepare the workplace for neurodivergent employees? In collaboration with Gareth's design expertise and insights from our workplace consultants, we examined the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals and identified key elements that support a positive environment, from colour schemes to fabric textures. From this discussion, we've created the top three elements every organisation needs to implement in their office design. Want to know more about designing an inclusive environment? If you’re struggling to retain and attract top talent in your company, there’s one reason you probably haven’t considered yet. Most businesses in this position look at a few areas first— 🔷 Is the compensation in line with industry standards? 🔷 Are the company wellness initiatives working? 🔷 Is the company culture inviting? Those factors are important. Yet many won’t consider one thing: the design of the workplace itself. The furniture is often seen as functional first, and cosmetic second. Art is an afterthought at best. Above all, interior design is mistakenly viewed as an expense with no ROI. However, studies have shown that a well-designed space— ✔ Boosts productivity. ✔ Increases presenteeism while reducing absenteeism. ✔ Increases job satisfaction by 31% Choosing the right workstations and seating for the work duties is critical for performance. Using a color palette beyond gray and white makes a big difference in mood. Yellows encourage creativity. Blues help with focus. Reds can help with motivation if used in small doses. Including real plants and curated art helps with focus and memory retention. Interior design isn’t the only part of the puzzle of how to retain talent, but it is a part. Bottom line: designing a space that works for the employees instead of against them will make them want to come back day after day. With boosts in productivity and not having to repeatedly onboard new staff, you’ll find it’s an investment that pays for itself.
