Since 2014, around USD 88 billion in petroleum assets have moved from publicly listed to private companies. As the world transitions away from fossil fuels, publicly listed companies are selling petroleum assets to private companies and national oil companies. National oil companies (NOCs) have acquired around $24 billion in assets from non-NOCs since 2014. Many assets that sub-Saharan African and Latin American NOCs have acquired appear vulnerable to energy transition risks. Oil-producing countries and regions must consider financial, human rights, and environmental issues. Great analysis by Nicola Woodroffe at Natural Resource Governance Institute. #responsibledivestment #energytransition #oilandgas #climatejustice

Read our comments in the FT about oil companies' huge investments in deepwater projects: “Big Oil’s attitude shows a lack of imagination beyond oil and gas,” says Mark van Baal, head of activist group Follow This. “At a time when the world must rapidly transition away from hydrocarbons, these companies are betting on decades-long fossil fuel projects and pouring huge amounts of capital into a market that will start declining before the end of the decade.” Read the entire Big Read by Myles McCormick in the Gulf of Mexico and Jamie Smyth in New York in the Financial Times: https://lnkd.in/eVMzsAAb Join the most impactful shareholder in Big Oil at join.follow-this.org

Chevron's Gorgon Project Struggles to Meet Carbon Capture Promises - Chevron's Gorgon plant in Western Australia, the world's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, captures much less carbon dioxide than expected. Data from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) indicates the project stores fewer than half of the emissions it removed from the reservoir four years ago. This is far below its approved target of capturing an average of 80% annually over five years. Since starting operations in mid-2019, Gorgon has averaged just 47% annually—falling short due to technical challenges like reservoir pressure. The IEEFA highlights that such problems are common, citing a 2022 study of 13 global CCS projects where only three achieved their targets. EKOenergy endorsed the Big Oil Reality Check report, written by David Tong and Kelly Trout from Oil Change International, and published today. The report assesses the climate plans and pledges of the eight largest U.S. and Europe-based oil and gas producers: BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies and finds that these are full of questionable accounting, misleading information, and greenwashing. Every company is “Grossly Insufficient” or “Insufficient” on most criteria. Three (Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil) are “Grossly Insufficient” – the lowest rating – on all criteria. The world needs a fair, fast, and complete transition away from fossil fuels, with some existing fields and mines being closed early. Governments and investors need to go far beyond the scope of current policies to catalyse the phase-out of fossil fuel activities, and to ensure it happens in a socially just and equitable way. Check out the report, the dedicated website and the recommendations here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dSBQqGxY
