This is great news for #Michigan's #highschool graduates. It's a big step towards making #highereducation more accessible and affordable for everyone. The #CommunityCollegeGuarantee initiative is a smart investment in Michigan's #futureworkforce. By removing #financialbarriers, more students will be able to pursue #associatedegrees or #skillscertificates, leading to better #jobopportunities and higher #earningpotential. It's encouraging to see states like Michigan taking the lead on free #communitycollege, especially after federal proposals stalled. This demonstrates a commitment to investing in #education and #workforcedevelopment at the state level. One thing to watch is how this program will be funded in the long term. While the initial funding is secured, it's important to ensure the program's sustainability to continue benefiting future generations of students.

Important new article from Laura Ullrich and Stephanie Norris on higher education funding trends in the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond 5th district. Key takeaway: "Many community college leaders feel resource constrained in ways that seem different from their four-year counterparts. This could get worse over time as student demand at community colleges shifts to high-cost technical programs. The cost of executing these programs is ever-increasing, and it far outweighs the cost of teaching traditional general education courses. As these changes occur, the gap between instruction costs at community colleges and four-year institutions is likely narrowing considerably." Complete College America https://lnkd.in/e9nNp69U

Is Higher Education Worth the Cost? Is Tuition Increasing? On Let's Talk ED this week, we (Zahi Atallah and @John Mercer) explore the value of higher education from ballooning costs and the future of good jobs, and we attempt to break the stigma associated with going to a community college. We explore the pressing issues and misconceptions that shape the landscape of higher education today, and its impact on the future of the American economic and workforce success. In the first segment, "Is Higher Education Worth the Cost? Is Tuition Increasing?", we tackle the ballooning costs of education and debate whether the investment in higher education is justified. We provide insights into the factors driving tuition hikes and discuss potential solutions to make education more affordable. For example, the fastest-growing college expense seems to not be tuition, but rather the cost of other necessary student services. These services include mental health counseling, career advising, and other support systems that are essential for student success. As colleges and universities strive to provide a more comprehensive support network for their students, the expenses associated with these services have surged, outpacing the growth of tuition fees. This trend underscores the increasing importance of holistic student support in higher education. The University of Michigan’s expansion of its Go Blue Guarantee as early as next fall is a big step forward in making higher education more accessible. Programs like this—along with efforts at Wayne State University and other Michigan institutions—are opening new pathways for young people. These initiatives don’t just change lives; they pave the way for a future where equitable access to higher education is the norm. At Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, we see the power of opportunity every day. Over the past 30 years, 95% of Mosaic alumni have gone on to college, with a 74% college persistence rate. As we prepare youth for post-secondary education and careers, programs like the Go Blue Guarantee help amplify their voices and create new possibilities. Let’s continue the work to turn possibilities into achievements. #EducationMatters #YouthEmpowerment #EducationEquity #PathwaysToPossibility
