Earlier this year, we (Wohl E et al. A&A Practice) showed that evaluating anesthesia practitioners based on ICU admission after ambulatory surgery is invalid. Can automate evaluations but misleading criterion. New study considers all anesthetics for surgery and postoperative length of stay. It also shows that it is invalid to consider LOS as associated with anesthesiologists' and nurse anesthetists' quality of clinical care. https://lnkd.in/gW262ryJ

If anesthesia is not given during surgery, the patient will experience pain and terror without anesthesia, and it can be fatal. Anesthesia awareness is a rare occurrence that happens when the paralytic and sedatives don't work, and the patient is conscious and able to move during surgery. Patients who experience anesthesia awareness may have varying levels of awareness, from brief recollections to remembering specific moments. While anesthesia awareness is rare, it can have long-term psychological effects. However, most patients who experience anesthesia awareness can safely have anesthesia again in the future. If you've experienced anesthesia awareness, you should talk with your healthcare provider about how it affects you.

The field of anesthesia is often considered one of the most critical, yet thankless and stressful branches of medicine. Have you ever noticed how rarely anesthesiologists receive recognition for their vital role in healthcare? While many focus on complex procedures and showcasing their expertise in areas like pain medicine and regional blocks, the importance of safe anesthesia for safe surgery is often overlooked. It's time to shift our focus. A safe anesthetist can truly transform the patient experience and create a safer environment for both patients and healthcare organizations. Let's take a moment to appreciate the significant impact of ensuring safe anesthesia for every surgery. #Anesthesia #Healthcare #PatientSafety #SafeSurgery

- World Anesthesia Day is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 16th of October every year to raise #awareness about the importance of #anesthesia in medicine. - This day also recognizes the anesthesia professionals, often known as #anesthesiologists, who help patients undergo surgery without experiencing any discomfort. - Anesthesia is a medical procedure that prevents patients from feeling pain during treatments like surgery, tissue sample removal (e.g., skin biopsies), dental work, certain screening, and diagnostic tests. - It enables patients to undergo surgeries that improve their health and long lives. - This year, 2024, the theme of #WorldAnesthesiaDay is “Workforce Well-Being.” - The theme focuses on a vital aspect of anesthesia that impacts our members, the well-being of their patients, and national health systems. - Throughout 2024, WFSA will raise awareness of the importance and impact of well-being on the anesthesia workforce and the patients they serve.
