New life for old plastics: Post-stabilization is the key to success Post-stabilization of #recyclates is crucial for quality assurance in the #plastics recycling industry. Customized stabilizer systems can neutralize oxidative damage, which increases the reusability of polyolefin recyclates. This leads not only to better product properties, but also reduces the consumption of resources and promotes the sustainable use of plastics. Within the framework of the Fraunhofer CCPE, the Fraunhofer LBF has devoted itself to the post-stabilization of recyclates and developed a new generation of stabilizer systems tailored to the special requirements of recyclates. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dz2ikynT Picture copyright: Fraunhofer LBF

Hello friends!😎 Very proud to publish my newest piece of research with Cleantech Group. Do check out the free blog and my thoughts below if you don’t subscribe to our insight service. KEY TAKEAWAYS: 🌎 Global virgin plastic production will not slow anytime soon; even with dramatic transitions to bio plastics or reduced plastic use campaigns, creating new polymers is essential for our economy, opening the door for high quality recycled plastic. 🌍 Not all recycling is equal! -💰The status quo, mechanical recycling, handles about 90% of all recycling in an exceptionally energy efficient manner but can’t accept all plastic types and is very sensitive to process malfunctions while producing degraded mixed plastic outputs. -⚡️Advanced Recycling, physiochemical reactions used to isolate monomers and polymers within plastic waste, vary significantly in their energy need and environmental impact. -🔎Securing high waste purity, or homogeneous plastic type, for the recycling process is absolutely essential to improve profitability, regardless of which recycling process is used. AMP and Greyparrot are leading the way with robotics and algorithm enabled sorting. 🌏The recycling market is taking defined shape thanks to corporate involvement, but not always to produce plastic. -⛽️Oil & Gas companies like Shell, ExxonMobil, and TotalEnergies are investing in several recycling technologies but primarily in pyrolysis as it can be used to produce a variety of fuels. -👕Clothing companies like ZARA USA and adidas have made huge progress to decarbonize their production using recycled PET textiles. -🥤Similarly, The Coca-Cola Company and Nestlé are transitioning to recycled PET packaging; boosting the development of depolymerization significantly. -🚮In a suprising find, I expect WM and Republic Services to dominate this market in the coming decade. These institutional waste managers have invested billions in recycling technology in the last decade and enjoy monopolistic control over waste, positioning both to accelerate American plastic recycling in unprecedented scale. I would like to give a huge thank you to all the innovators and incumbents I spoke with to write this research below. The current state of plastic pollution is daunting and maturity of recycling underwhelming, but innovation is poised to make a real difference as it spreads globally. Thanks to my friends at: MacroCycle Technologies, JEPLAN, INC., Plastic Energy, PureCycle Technologies, Agilyx, ENCINA, Novoloop, Loop Industries, Enerkem, SYNOVA, Blue Polymers, Polystyvert, beworm, Norbite, Saperatec GmbH, Mura Technology, Pryme, Anellotech, Inc., PS Loop B.V., DePoly, Eastman, TerraCycle, and Ioniqa Technologies!
Plastic production is expected to double by 2050, and by 2060, emissions from plastics production and disposal are also expected to double. Can innovative #plasticrecycling methods evolve to help mitigate the environmental impact of plastics production? Leading technologies in advanced recycling include pyrolysis, depolymerization, and solvent dissolution. However, these solutions are not without disadvantages. I am delighted to participate in the Advanced Recycling Conference 2024 in Cologne, promoted by nova-Institut GmbH, where I will present BluePlasma Power technology capable of converting the very difficult carbon-based #waste (mixed plastics, textiles, foams, paper, solid digestate from bio-methane plants, etc - even mixed) that nowadays are going to landfilling or incineration into #CO2-free #Hydrogen and/or Circular Ultra-Low CO2 #Carbonates. Some of the #Circular Carbonates we can produce are sodium carbonate -soda ash-, sodium bicarbonate or potassium carbonate, among others (#LCA's: reduction up to 85% in the CO2 footprint compared to standard industrial processes).
