THE Congress – NATURALfiberEXTRACTION When: Wednesday, 9 October 2024 Where: Look 21, Türlenstraße 2, 70191 Stuttgart   Innovative natural fiber products are a growing market due to their functional properties in many applications as textiles, technical applications, lightweight materials. Moreover, the enhanced use of natural fibers can contribute to the achievement of climate targets by the reduction of consumption of fossil resources and energy.   Currently, there are various technologies, upcoming and already on the market, worldwide to process natural fibers. The NATURALfiberEXTRACTION Congress aims to create a platform for all stakeholders involved in the supply chain - from farmers to users – to get an overview of the different technologies, to share experiences and to provide a decision support for building an effective, economic, and reliable supply chain for natural fibers.   The NATURALfiberEXTRACTION Congress intends to promote sustainable business, showing solutions to effectively process plant-based raw materials and residues into fibers for clothing, home textiles and technical applications. The focus of the congress is on industrialized fiber extraction, as this is where fiber and textile technology know-how is most needed.   THE Congress NATURALfiberEXTRACTION will take place under the scientific coordination of PD Dr.-Ing. Thomas Stegmaier and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Milwich (Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF)).

We’re pleased to share that Faber Futures has been selected as one of the grantees of the UK Research and Innovation £11.5 million bioinnovation boost, aiming to enhance UK sustainable biomanufacturing. In partnership with Evolutor, a biomanufacturing start-up pioneering precision fermentation for advanced biomaterials, we will test and develop renewable feedstocks for our microbial dye technology. By tapping into industrial side streams, we aspire to create a circular and resilient value chain for textile dyeing and the wider fashion industry that opens up market participation through a decentralised bio-manufacturing model. This joint investment from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and Innovate UK has awarded 21 collaborative R&D projects from across industry and academia that embrace the biological potential through scalable as well as sustainable products and processes. We are very grateful for having received such a significant opportunity to contribute to the UK’s synergetic efforts driven towards restorative innovation and the 2050 net zero strategy. Polymers? We all have heard about the huge impact plastic has on the environment and for human health (e.g. microplastics). What we need to talk more about is on the incredible scientific advances on the field. At the International Conference of #Polymers2024, last week in Athens (Greece), I had the good fortune of hearing about last advancements in polymer science to produce safe and sustainable materials and alternative materials. It was discussed clean, green, and efficient production processes. As well as polymers life cycle assessments and risk assessments, techniques for decontamination and environmental remediation, and many techniques for polymer recycling and reuse.  It was a huge event full of innovations in polymers technologies towards sustainable development. At the conference I also presented the market analysis for the Redondo project with Cristina Onorato and IOANNA DELIGKIOZI. #BIORING_INTERVIEWS #What is your #vision about the #development of the #biobased sector in #Europe? Being at the forefront of research and technology and investing in biobased innovation is essential, not only to address climate change, but also to compete and remain independent in the global scene. Europe is a relatively small region with limited natural resources, such as raw materials and energy, and biobased solutions could help. We need to be confident in our knowledge and capability, as I think we have the technologies and expertise to break the predominance of fossils-based raw materials. Europe is a top player in coatings research, alongside with USA. Polyurethane (PU) has been invented in Europe, and we remain quite competitive in PU-coatings. We are sustaining investments in sustainability of coatings, with two main different approaches: one is to look at the overall carbon neutrality of the manufacturing cycle, the other one is to increase the bio-based content of coatings. The latter is still not cost-effective, but it is anyway less expensive for companies than covering CO2 taxes related to fossil-based production. This is way I’m confident that European chemical companies will continue to sustain research and to develop biobased products to put on the market. However, given a lot of R&D is still far from the market, public investments remain crucial. In my view, they are not yet sufficient, and they should be long term. EU policies in green investments are somehow unstable, both in terms of funding and topics. For example, we have seen in the past a focus on research in biodegradable or compostable solutions, then suddenly the policy goals have been changed to full recycling approaches.
