EV BATTERY RECYCLING & RECOVERING MATERIALS 🔋♻️ Battery recycling isn't new. Some manufacturers, like Nissan, have been incorporating recycled battery components back into their production lines for certain models. This shows the potential for a "closed-loop" system where resources are efficiently reused. 😎 Additionally, innovative companies like Redwood Materials are pushing the boundaries by recovering a wide range of materials, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper, rather than just a select few. ⛴️ Another example of how EV battery Modules that aren’t suitable for EVs anymore get re-used: @ KateFantom on X posted about selling these modules, which are 13 years old and are now used for powering a canal boat. They run it completely off grid with a small solar array. They are expected to add another 10 modules soon. Over the past few years, there’s been plenty of misinformation about what happens to electric vehicle batteries at their end of life, including from fossil car propagandists painting dystopian scenes of millions of BEV batteries piling up around us. For some reason their concern never seems to extend to the 50-odd tonnes of fossil fuel ripped out of the earth and burnt for every fossil car. However, new research suggests that end-of-life EV batteries may be in hot demand with the used packs containing valuable critical minerals and the recycling capacity forecast will far exceed EV battery feedstock. According to a new report from ABI Research, based on current plans, by 2030 US-based EV battery recycling plants will have almost four times the battery recycling capacity compared to available stock end-of-life EV batteries. Battery recycling capacity set to outstrip supply of end-of-life EV batteries by 4 to 1 https://lnkd.in/gZ_W25VU A 2021 study showed that Electric cars require far less raw material than petrol, diesel cars https://lnkd.in/gqndW2B7 Electric vehicles (EVs) consume just a fraction of the materials needed to produce and drive an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, and will use less and less as battery technology evolves, a new study from European clean transport lobby Transport & Environment has found.

Altilium secures UK government funding for new EV battery recycling projects with a total investment of £1.74m (US$2.3m). 🇬🇧 Altilium is proud to have secured further grant funding from Innovate UK and the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) for two innovative new projects, as it continues to accelerate the scale-up of its EV battery recycling operations and support the industrialisation of an electrified automotive supply chain in the UK. 🔋 The funding will be delivered through the APC under its Advanced Route to Market Demonstrator competition (ARMD3) and the Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF). ♻️ The ARMD3 competition is aimed at rapidly developing automotive products with a clear route to market. Under the 12-month project, Altilium will deliver a carbon reduction technology in BEVs, through production and validation of battery cells with an OEM using its EcoCathode NMC811 – 2036 CAM. ⚡ The cathode active materials (CAM) will be produced using recycled materials at Altilium’s Devon-based facilities and will comply with stringent new EU battery regulations. By 2031, new EV batteries in the EU must include 6% recycled lithium, 6% recycled nickel and 16% recycled cobalt. These targets increase to 12%, 15% and 26%, respectively, by 2036. ⚡ This is the first time that battery cells produced with recovered CAM and qualified with an automotive OEM will be demonstrated in the UK. Further details of the pioneering project will be announced soon. ♻️ The new feasibility study, supported by the ATF, will support the scale-up of Altilium's technology with construction of the UK's first recycling plant to CAM, capable of processing 150,000 EV batteries per year. The six-month study which builds on previous engineering work with Hatch will significantly de-risk key elements of the project, allowing Altilium to strengthen its understanding of the market opportunity and close out any knowledge gaps. This morning 🌞 I am enlightened by "The dawn of electrified trucking" 🌇 as the headline of the current study on the rise of 🚚 battery electric (BETs) and fuel cell trucks (FCTs) from strategy& https://lnkd.in/eiVm22ej The study includes promising numbers stating that: - In the US, EU, and Greater China, we expect a electric truck market diffusion dominance from 2035 with ~70% - Battery electric trucks outperform internal combustion engine technology reaching a cost advantage of ~30% in 2030 - Electric vehicle volume requires a quick ramp-up of the new infrastructure network translating into ~2,000 stations by 2035 I am convinced that the moment has come to go all in supporting these zero emission vehicles and and as a logical consequence also the zero emission energy producers. There are several reasons to do so and a bunch of new opportunities and business models allowing small players with a visionary spirit to play a major role. Bringing just one example out of many, the recycling of lithium ion batteries by the Belgien company UmiCore, Europes largest battery recycler. Umicore (recycling 7000t of lithium ion batteries/ year) "says its latest technology recovers over 95% of cobalt, copper and nickel from various battery chemistries. A 150,000t plant is slated for 2026." 😎 https://lnkd.in/e9gyMQdW Or think of the additional possibilities that a forwarding agent with a solar system on the roof or a flexible electricity tariff has today if the renewable electricity is used during loading and unloading of shipping goods. In addition to all the other reports, reading such future scenarios gives me a positive start to the week. Thank you to everyone who is working on the various value-adding elements! 💪 🚀
