✨️🎉Excited to share our new research published in Applied Surface Science: "Pt-Ru decorated WO3-based photocatalyst-assisted electrolysis hybrid cell for hydrogen production". We developed a photocatalyst-assisted electrolysis system using PtRu-WO3 to reduce energy consumption and ensure stable hydrogen production, even under intermittent light conditions. This innovative approach stores solar energy during the day through Fe³⁺ ion formation and oxygen evolution and utilizes it at night for water electrolysis, achieving ~70% higher efficiency than conventional methods. We also successfully scaled up the system (122.5 cm² illumination area) under natural sunlight, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions. Sector coupling and decarbonization (Article in Energy) Sector coupling is gaining international attention as a means to drive decarbonization in many countries worldwide. Our study simulates 27 sector coupling technology combinations and then evaluates their efficacy in meeting Germany’s CO2 emission targets for 2030, 2045, and 2050, respectively. Our findings show that ambitious technological pathways involving disruptive innovations in multiple sectors can substantially contribute to the decarbonization of the German energy system. Using a scoring system that incorporates technical and socioeconomic indicators, we reveal the relation between reductions in CO2 emissions and multi-criteria-based scores assigned to specific sector coupling scenarios. Our results favor emission reductions from both a socio-economic perspective and a purely economic one, and they highlight the benefits of disruptive sectoral linkages in achieving emission reduction targets. Nevertheless, none of the technology combinations analyzed here meet the ambitious German emission targets. The article is the outcome of extensive data collection and simulation efforts. It appeared in the prestigious journal Energy (Elsevier). Co-authors are Jonas Beckmann and Kai Klöckner. #decarbonization #energy #RWTHAachen #sectorcoupling #sustainability

You must have heard of solar panels, but what about bio-solar panels? Well I am just talking about leaves. Excitingly, it is now possible to generate electricity from succulent plants like "Corpuscularia lehmannii". This breakthrough could soon lead to "energy farms" that harvest electricity from plants. For more details read what Matheus Manete has shared with us, by clicking on the link below. Why succulent plants? Actually it is because of their higher water efficiency, Resilience to extreme conditions, and ability to perform photosynthesis in low light.
