They will run Creative Break Time, a project that aims to radically shift the access of teachers to creative time, fostering inspiration, collaboration, and peer learning. The theme for THE SUSSEX 2024 is Duality. Jo explains why she chose the theme, and how it can be interpreted and used to inspire your entries in a BLOG POST over on our website. Read an excerpt of the post below: When I think about a subject, theme, or title I like to use literature as a starting point. I always start by researching what the word itself means: DUALITY 1. the quality or condition of being duel “This duality of purpose was discernible in the appointments”. 2. an instance of oppositions or contrast between two aspects of something, a dualism “his photographs capitalize on the dualities of light and dark, stillness and movement”. An idea, observation, or opinion is shown through an artwork that is shared with and communicated to others. It is in this dualism, the convergence of artistic intention with the physical building blocks of visual art that entices the observer to ponder the artwork and why it exists. Drawing them in a rich tapestry of stories, thoughts, and emotions and communicating with them directly. Next time you are at a museum or an exhibition look at the other people around you. Look at those that are caught in front of an artwork for a length of time. They are considering, looking, questioning, admiring, and thinking about what is in front of them. Duality explores the positive and negative spaces in life, between lines and lived-in experiences. Head on over to our website to read more and get your mind immersed in thinking about DUALITY https://buff.ly/3yQ4mE0 #sussexart #sussexartists #sussexcontemporary #opencall #artistopportunity #thesussex #newhaven #duality

I'm thrilled to share my latest publication, which explores the intersection of public art, colonial monuments, and the impact of artistic interventions. It focuses on the Monumental Shadows project by artist duo Various & Gould, who challenged the Otto von Bismarck monument in Berlin with a temporary paper-mâché intervention. Their symbolic tearing of this colonial-era figure raised important questions about European colonialism in public spaces, happening alongside the monument's restoration - a paradox of critique and preservation. This intervention, while temporary, sparked public debate, from support to hostility, highlighting the challenges of confronting entrenched narratives. The project shows how art can reshape societal views and prompt us to rethink how we engage with colonial symbols. Conducting this interview gave me the opportunity to bring the artists' voices to the forefront, and it feels like a "fifth shadow" in their project - extending their efforts into academic and media spaces to amplify their work. This collaboration, which includes SAVVY Contemporary's Colonial Neighbours - partners of Various & Gould, has been a vital part of the ongoing dialogue on decoloniality in public spaces. Special thanks to the artists Various & Gould and PAD Journal team, especially Tanja Schult and Brenda Schmahmann for their invaluable support for making it possible to bring these critical discussions to a wider audience. If you are moving offices, updating your current fit-out and need some ergonomic advice, then reach out to Clive. Buro and I have been collaborating with our friends at Kulbardi on their Six Seasons Indigenous fabric project for several years now. From the start we always thought it would develop into a great success story, those thoughts have proven to be 100% correct. Last week it was a pleasure to finally catch up with the Six Seasons artist Kevin Bynder. We were both at the School of Isolated and Distance Education in Leederville just north of Perth WA. Kevin has been commissioned by SIDE to create art pieces for their public rooms, and I was there to ensure our latest delivery went without a hitch.

Want to show your work at galleries? You can't just set them free in oceans of art without any organization, presentation, instructions, or guidance on what they'll be looking at. You have to curate the work first. Limit what you show to your most significant subjects or series, current or recent work, ongoing projects, pieces that best represent your skills, and other noteworthy examples. Know what you're showing and why. Impressing with your best always beats overwhelming them with everything.

Mark your calendars! Two Cities, UnAware of Existence is a declaration, and visual detente of each artist's emotions through a transitional stage. Our title references a passage from the short story Hidden Cities in Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino. Margaret and Nuran view themselves as busy cities, developing and under construction. There are numerous elements and movements happening underneath our everyday interactions, and ponderings as we grow into another stage of our being: young adulthood. Knowing this, we have begun the process of grieving and reconciliation of our new reality in the form of abstract journalistic prints, sculptures and paintings. In this show, Margaret and Nuran create an array of abstract, non-representational mixed media pieces to document their present experiences with the ephemerality of youthful naivete, the pressures of aging as marginalized people and the symbols of memory . This series serves as a visual letter from each artist reconciling our respective identities as marginalized young adults and showcasing our respectives symbols of memory and self reflection.

We are thrilled to announce that OUTSIDE's Pride in the Moorlands project is being funded by Historic England’s History in the Making grant programme. This new grant programme has been launched to encourage young people to engage with and celebrate their local heritage. Pride in the Moorlands is a new collaborative, co-created project which will lead up to the first ever Pride event to take place in the Staffordshire Moorlands in June 2025. A steering group of 13-25 year olds from across the Moorlands will help to co-produce Pride in the Moorlands. The group will meet monthly and undertake training, visits, research, invite guest speakers, and reach out to other groups, partners and collaborators. Facilitators and artists will work closely with the group to explore and interpret the stories of local people and places. The young people will then work with an artist to co-create a place maker celebrating the stories they want to commemorate. This public art piece will be unveiled at the first Pride event in the area, co-produced by the young people. Historic England is working with young people (aged 13 to 25) and funding 11 youth-led projects that will create place markers across the North of England. They will mark and celebrate important local histories that have been overlooked and bring them to a broader audience. These co-produced projects put young people’s voices at the heart of the creative decision making to increase confidence and connection to their local heritage. Interested in getting involved in Pride in the Moorlands?
