Manufacturing Automation – the Mismatch Asking the workers to Upskill is harder than Right Sizing the technology! The current state of any manufacturing process presents opportunities for improvement through the introduction of newer technology as tailored to the application and simultaneously challenges the workers to not only accept but also adapt and use that automation in a manner which increases PRODUCTIVITY. This is after all the intention, and speed with which this can be accomplished determines success. However, unlike the technology which can be quickly DEBUGGED, ITERATED and OPTIMIZED, the worker represents the DURABLE traits of the current state ranging from - Rigorous adherence to procedures, - Tribal knowledge tendencies, or even - Outright indifference. Identifying which is critical to formulating the form factor and composition of that automation IF we hope to reap the benefits. It is LIKELY that any changes to the process and introduction of new automation will itself create DISRUPTIONS and even RESISTANCE to change but these can be mitigated, if not eliminated by: - Sizing the automation first to the technology levels already in use by the process. - Focusing on automating the process rather than the worker. - Improving the ergonomics and safety of the process. - Making user interfaces intuitively similar to what the process uses now. - Engaging the workers by asking them what they need to do their job. All FEEL GOOD stuff, but ultimately, it’s the workers that need to maintain and operate the automation on a high uptime and predictable rate to increase PRODUCTIVITY. Especially true in SME operations where technical resources and support are more challenging, if a large technology GAP is created between the current and future states, the mitigation COSTS and COMPLEXITY will inevitably ERASE all productivity potential while also souring the process on future automation initiatives. Asking the workers to Upskill is harder than Right Sizing the technology! -- ”Not to worry … everything was fine!” Pressed a little further, the engineer told me that the reason the third shift operator had called and left the message was because he, (the engineer), had attached a sticker on the machine with our phone number and instructing all the shift operators to call if there were “any” issues using this system!” -- How do you right size the automation to the process? Your thoughts are appreciated and please share this post if you think your connections will find it of interest. 👉 Comment, follow or connect to collaborate on automation for enhanced productivity in your process. https://lnkd.in/ehwMHqrG #industry40 #automation #productivity #robots

Navigating Challenges in Calculating OEE. Calculating Overall Equipment Effectiveness is crucial for measuring manufacturing efficiency, but it's not without its challenges. Here are some common hurdles and how to overcome them: - Data Accuracy: Inconsistent or inaccurate data can skew OEE calculations. Implement robust data collection systems and ensure regular maintenance checks to keep data reliable. - Complex Calculations: OEE involves multiple components (Availability, Performance, Quality) which can be complex to measure. Use advanced software tools that automate OEE calculations, reducing manual errors. - Operator Training: Lack of proper training can lead to misinterpretation of data. Invest in comprehensive training programs to ensure operators understand how to accurately track and report OEE metrics. - Resistance to Change: Implementing OEE tracking can face resistance from staff. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and clearly communicate the benefits of accurate OEE measurement to all team members. By addressing these challenges head-on, manufacturers can harness the full potential of OEE to drive operational excellence and boost productivity. #OEE #ManufacturingExcellence #OperationalEfficiency #ContinuousImprovement

With industrial automation, which is more important, the tech or the operators? Imagine ordering a high-performance track car but getting no training on how to drive it. You’d have an incredible machine at your disposal, but without the skills to handle it, you’d never unlock its true potential. The same is true for warehouse and manufacturing automation systems. Too often, companies focus on designing and installing state-of-the-art systems without placing enough emphasis on teaching the operators who will use the tech every day. This gap leaves valuable assets underutilized, leading to frustration, inefficiencies, and missed opportunities. Because of this, Bastian Solutions doesn’t view completion of installation or getting to Go-Live as success. The real work begins with empowering the operators. That’s why we developed a full department solely focused on comprehensive operator and maintenance training, ensuring your staff can fully leverage your new systems from day one and beyond. Additionally, we have a team focused on Operations Engineering, dedicated to observing and consulting your operations leadership on best practices and change management with operations. So, which is more important, the tech or the operators? The reality is you have to teach the operators in order to leverage the tech. Talking about the tech is the fun part, but the operators determine your true success. Let’s discuss operations so you can maximize your automation assets.
