Last Thursday, The Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry, LIF and the EU Commission organized a seminar on EU competitiveness and the future of Life Science ahead of the European Parliament elections on June 9th. The discussion focused on how competitiveness is a crucial issue that can contribute to prosperity and welfare for Europe. EU Minister Jessika Roswall and knowledgeable experts participated in the discussions, including Jenni Nordborg, Margareta Haag, Per Alfredsson and IQVIA's Stefan Ohlsson, who delivered a market overview. The messages about the need for increased investments in research and innovation to keep up with the US and China, as well as the importance of simplifying regulations, were particularly appreciated. A market that welcomes innovation and sees it as an investment rather than a cost is also a crucial parameter for increasing competitiveness. To achieve these changes and shape Europe's, and thus Sweden's, future, Sweden needs to be more proactive. This requires a partnership between the public and private sectors.

Yesterday, Roche Danmark together with Danish Chamber of Commerce (Dansk Erhverv) co-hosted the event "Exploring European Life Science Competitiveness," bringing all of Roche’s General Managers in Europe together with key external stakeholders from Denmark to discuss how we can strengthen and maintain Europe's #competitiveness in the life science sector. The Danish Ministry of Business and Lif - Lægemiddelindustriforeningen each shared learnings and insights into Denmark's efforts to become a global leading life science nation and also how they prepare for the upcoming Danish EU presidency. We also had the opportunity to engage in fruitful discussions about the future of public private collaboration between industry and the healthcare sector to address capacity challenges and create societal value. A few key takeaways: → The life sciences sector is a crucial strategic asset for Europe, delivering innovations vital for the health and benefit of EU citizens and societies. However, we need to address challenges around access to new innovation and attracting R&D. Is Denmark really in an economic trouble? If not for the strong Pharma (Novo) performance in the country, then YES, and this should be worrisome for the government. The extent of Novo Nordisk dependency is big, as local economy expands and contracts based on its performance. This interrelationship has somehow to dissociate soon enough, and have the country's economy expand and flourish without this co-dependent relationship. It is politically and economically unsustainable for the country itself. According to Bloomberg: "Gross domestic product dropped 1.8% from the previous three months, the largest fall in almost four years." Danish economy can and must identify other areas of growth soon, and diversify its fiscal growth portfolio for the attainment of a more stable, recession-free future.

Novo Nordisk’s market value has soared to almost $590 billion, surpassing the entire Danish economy, sparking a 'Nokia risk' concern for Denmark. Ozempic and Wegovy, Novo's diabetes and obesity drugs, have become global phenomena, driving billions in sales and creating a booming market for weight loss drugs. This success has made Novo Nordisk Europe’s most valuable company, significantly impacting Denmark. The company’s tax contributions and investments have fueled Denmark's economic growth, supporting government spending on defense, green initiatives, and aid for Ukraine. However, this influence also brings risks. Novo’s dominant role means any misstep could affect Denmark’s economy, research funding, and job market. There's growing concern about the 'Nokia risk,' referring to the Finnish telecommunications giant's collapse, which had widespread economic repercussions. Novo's success story is not just a corporate triumph but a critical factor in Denmark’s economic landscape.
