And hotspots of air pollution exist near schools and childcare centres. - We have a solution - to get people to turn off their engine when parked. J. Nadine Gracia, M.D., MSCE, TFAH President and CEO sat with the American Public Health Association's APHA TV at #APHA2024 to discuss TFAH’s recent Blueprint for a Healthier America report. The conversation focused on the report’s recommendations for advancing the #publichealth system and workforce, as well as educating policymakers about the importance of increased and sustained public health funding. The report’s six priority areas focus on: •   Ensuring that public health is ready to meet the growing health challenges of the 21st century through strong and robust infrastructure and workforce, •   Strengthening public health readiness for health security threats, •   Promoting health and well-being across a person’s lifespan, •   Advancing health equity by addressing structural discrimination, •   Addressing non-medical drivers of health, and  •   Protecting the scientific integrity and effectiveness of federal public health agencies. As Dr. Gracia stated, “Public health and the public health system is at an inflection point and it is critical that we act.” TFAH is joined by public health advocates, organizations, and practitioners in championing the report’s message and policy recommendations. "Public health saved your life today and you didn't even know it." This challenge of the invisibility of #publichealth is something I've come up against over and over again in my career, particularly in my work in #vaccines and other areas of #preventive care. How do you quantify the impact of interventions where success is invisible? How do you convince funders and policymakers to keep investing limited resources in these unsexy but critical programs, rather than diverting them to the next shiny new thing? What do you do when you become the victim of your own success? So excited to dig into this new PBS #documentary series about how public health makes modern life possible but remains tragically underfunded, undervalued, and misunderstood.

The Invisible Shield is a four-part documentary showcasing just how important public health is to society. The first episode aired last night, and as a Doctor of Public Health student, I watched with my notebook. Here’s a few thoughts. In the last century, we’ve gained 30 years of life expectancy. 25 of those years gained were done by things that can only happen as collective. That collective is public health. Life expectancy in the US has lowered, and it is not entirely due to COVID. Cancers, suicides, homicides, chronic diseases, and other factors are part of the problem. One of the biggest problems is the lack of attention and funding given to public health when there is no emergency/pandemic. When it comes to decision-making, some may think the CDC calls the shots. This is false- control lies within the states. Every state doesn’t have an army, so why do we have 50 different voices calling the shots in public health? We have to separate science from political agendas. Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department was at risk of dissolving because the county members and government did not approve of their COVID safety protocols. They were trying to dissolve the health department DURING the pandemic. Keep in mind, health departments provide many services that include WIC, dental care, child health, and others that serve everyone in the community. In public health, the community is your patient, not one individual. We work to prevent tragedy before it happens, but this is also where we lose the ability to prove why what we do needs more support. When we do our job well, you won’t see it. Have you seen the data HRSA released this week!? Over 31 million total patients were served at HRSA-funded health centers in 2023, an increase of 2.7 million since 2020. While this is incredible, Community Health Centers (CHCs) must stay vigilant and manage funds carefully to continue to serve their communities. It’s National Health Center Week - a time to celebrate these clinics and build awareness about their amazing work. Recently, CLC Consultant, Michael Wiser, was interviewed by a reporter in New Mexico who is concerned about the financial struggles at Federally Qualified Health Centers. Despite this, we know that CHCs are strong organizations that have overcome many challenges over the years. Their strength is proven by the growing number of patients they serve.
