I want to send out a huge thank you this morning to Ray Pinder and his leadership team at Hernando County School District for hosting a site visit yesterday and giving 12 other Florida school districts a chance to see Hernando’s Associate Substitute Teacher Program in action. We can’t solve the teacher shortage crisis without district leaders like Ray Pinder, who are willing to challenge the status quo. As a former principal, assistant superintendent, and now superintendent at Hernando County School District, Ray saw firsthand the widespread teacher shortage and the challenges it imposed on schools. Traditional hiring fairs and other recruiting strategies weren’t cutting it anymore, especially as local educator programs dwindled. Then Ray learned about BloomBoard and the possibilities for creating a teacher pathway for current district employees: People could earn their bachelor’s degree and teaching credential via an on-the-job approach to higher education coursework. Ray figured out the district could cover the cost of an associate teacher in training for less than the district was budgeting to fill vacancies. And it meant more talent in the teacher pipeline and more people in classrooms immediately. Ray was willing to navigate the initial challenges of setting up an employer-delivered educational program. From figuring out how to leverage his staff to navigating the bureaucracy of state licensure, he pushed the envelope on solutions. His original goal? Enroll five associate teachers in the first year. The result? Thirty-four signed up and are thriving. (You can hear directly from them in our video.) Here’s to leaders like Ray and districts like Hernando County - embracing new models, challenging higher ed, and pioneering change for a brighter educational future.

One major mistake we make as humans is quantifying academic education received within the four walls of classrooms as the sole measure of being educated or learned. You see, that street wisdom (OT), that guidance from uncles and aunties who correct you when you’re wrong, but you always think they are inconsequential because they are not your relatives are going to count for you as lessons later in life! That home training that many of you have neglected from your parents, and you have decided to go the way of the uncultured children, is actually the best form of education because it transcends generations. Can you transfer your academic certificate to your children later in life? 🤷🏽♀️ Iree o! IDEASwithMrWood💡 #MindetIsEverything

A Friday thought... There are 24,059 schools in England. Imagine, if every school took on one Teaching Assistant Apprentice each year. How many people could enter a sector they care passionately about? How quickly could we create a skilled national TA workforce? How many of them could progress to become a fully qualified teacher? And how many children and young people could receive the additional support that they need? Lets get the conversation going and support our schools and young people. Please comment with your thoughts. So many sunflowers, how many Teaching Assistants can we grow together?

Happy teacher's day! to all my fellow educators. Schools are large bureaucratic organizations, but at the forefront are the teachers who show up daily, imparting knowledge and serving as role models. Teachers are not just educators; they are friends, mentors, and beacons of hope during difficult times. Education is more challenging than ever, with shrinking resources, larger classrooms, evolving attitudes, technological hurdles, campus unrest, etc. Moreover, some of the most talented people I know are teachers. They could work for major corporations with attractive salaries and benefits, and no matter how hard it can be at times, they choose to teach. Why??? Because they love it. Please take a moment to thank your teachers. Teachers, keep up the great work. We need you! #education #NationalTeacherAppreciationDay #college #teaching #stemeducation #teahergrattitude
