Exciting to witness the resilience and remarkable strides of the #Youth #IDEAthon cohort since we delivered the program right at the peak of the pandemic. Proud of the work my team and I at NASE Africa did to identify and support them, particularly during the bootcamp where many of their ideas really took shape. It's gratifying to see the lasting impact of our efforts as they continue to thrive, with some going on to win multiple national and regional competitions, others securing VC funding, and a few already exporting to as far as Europe. Thanks Winifred Nakandi for your kind words, for passing by with your business colleague, and for inspiring the Girl Child through your products. Continue pushing forward with your mission! On a sad note, one of the facilitators during the above mentioned bootcamp, John Birungi Babirukamu, MCIM, tragically passed on yesterday. John was passionate about #Digital #Marketing. He wowed the participants during the bootcamp with his digital wizardry. The efforts of his session were apparent during the pitch sessions where marketing was one of the best presented aspects of the pitches. His impact is also evident in the programmes digital content that was meant for the IDEAthon TV show (we hope this will still be aired some day, especially as some of these start-ups are already on their way to million dollar valuations). As a result of this, the #Youth #IDEAthon cohort has agreed to continue checking on each other, through regular events, with one slated for July this year. Entrepreneurship can be a stressful and lonely journey. It's not often that most entrepreneurship programs consider the stresses of Entrepreneurship and it's effects on the mental health, especially for youthful participants - which, in Uganda's case, are the majority. Often the focus is on the #grant, and #accountability. Full Stop. There's need to adopt a holistic approach, that also recognises that failure is an inevitable part of this journey. #Empathy #RIPJohn #Entrepreneurship #Ecosystems
On my way from Liverpool, I stopped by Birmingham City University and paid a courtesy visit to Dennis Aguma, a Business Incubation Consultant that conducted the first-ever Youth IDEAthon in Uganda that saw 100 young people win seed funding from the UNDP to bring their ideas to life. Emerging amongst the Top 10 finalists of the Youth IDEAthon gave me an opportunity to develop an acceptable prototype of the reusable sanitary pads that women and girls in Uganda have grown to love, and have given a source of livelihood to semi-illiterate young women in terms of skilling and employment provided by Msichana Uganda

In 2019, The Do More Foundation, established by RCL FOODS, launched the Township Economy Programme in partnership with Niya Consulting to empower young women in rural South African communities as sustainable entrepreneurs. This initiative addresses critical challenges, including poverty, social barriers, inadequate infrastructure, and limited resources. Here's some key insights: 1. Overcoming Language and Educational Barriers: Tailored training modules help women overcome language and educational obstacles that hinder their entrepreneurial efforts. 2. Real-World Relevance: Programs are designed to tackle the socio-economic realities these women face, ensuring practical, applicable training. 3. From Survival to Strategy: One-on-one mentoring during a six-month incubation phase provides essential support for implementing sustainable practices. 4. Community Partnership: Successful development work involves viewing the community as partners rather than beneficiaries, emphasizing collaboration and listening to their needs. 5. Collaborative Approach: The programme prioritizes open communication, recognizing that development is a complex and non-linear process. 6. Ubuntu and ‘Paying It Forward’: Participants are encouraged to reinvest their skills and resources back into their communities, fostering a culture of support and empowerment. Want to know more initiatives in equipping female entrepreneurs within South Africa's township economies, read the full article by DO MORE FOUNDATION. Link in the comments. Happy International Youth Day! This year's theme, "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," perfectly captures the impact young people are making through technology. At Sawa World, we're witnessing how digital tools are impacting our work toward our vision of creating a world without poverty, where youth lead their way out. Our partnerships with young entrepreneurs are fueling innovation and creating opportunities for youth in vulnerable communities. Through our online training workshops and our YouTube channel (https://lnkd.in/dYPt_Jdr), these entrepreneurs have provided youth with knowledge of easy-to-start local income skills that can lift them out of poverty. The Ujana Coffee Project is another example of one of our initiatives where we have leveraged the power of digital solutions to provide wide-scale access to easy-to-start local income skills. By creating a dedicated webpage (https://lnkd.in/eKvbXYcG) during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have enabled young coffee farmers in Uganda to access free learning content such as videos and posters to guide them in starting microbusinesses that can help them diversify their incomes. We are excited about what the future of digital technology holds in creating a brighter future for all. #SawaWorld #InternationalYouthDay #YouthEmpowerment #EndPoverty

Did you know? 💡 The illiteracy rate in Uganda currently stands at 70%, according to a recent report by The New Vision. Even more concerning is that 7 out of 10 illiterate individuals are women. This stark reality highlights a critical challenge: many women entrepreneurs in Uganda struggle with essential skills like reading, bookkeeping, drafting business proposals, interpreting financial statements, or calculating profits accurately. No wonder many struggle with accessing bank loans. Yet, women drive Uganda’s entrepreneurial spirit. According to the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, 38.2% of all business owners in Uganda are women—a remarkable figure indicating that nearly 4 in 10 business owners are female. Women also make up 52.5% of the labor force, demonstrating their pivotal role in economic growth. However, for these women entrepreneurs to thrive, they need more than determination—they need literacy skills that empower them to run their businesses effectively and confidently. 📢 A Call to Action I urge the #GovernmentofUganda, the #MinistryofGenderLabourandSocialDevelopment, and related organizations to prioritize adult literacy programs as a core strategy for empowering women entrepreneurs. 🌟📚 Boosting literacy levels is not just about education—it’s about fostering innovation, financial independence, and sustainable community transformation. How We Can Make a Difference Invest in community-based adult education centers to make learning accessible. Partner with private organizations and NGOs to design tailored literacy programs for women entrepreneurs. Leverage technology and mobile learning tools to bring education to rural women, where it's needed most. 🤝 Join the Movement I invite fellow advocates, policymakers, and stakeholders to champion this cause. Together, we can break down the barriers holding back countless women entrepreneurs and unlock their potential for economic and social impact. 💼 Let’s ensure no woman is left behind. 🙌✨ #AdultLiteracy #WomenEconomicEmpowermentAdvocate 👩🦱💪 #Entrepreneurship 💼 #Uganda 🇺🇬 #EconomicGrowth 📈

🚀 Why Does CareerKit Exist? 🚀 At CareerKit, we’re on a mission to tackle one of Africa’s most pressing challenges: the high unemployment rate and the widespread underutilization of human talent, particularly among the youth. But why do we do what we do? Let’s dive into the 5 Whys that drive our purpose: 1️⃣ Why does CareerKit exist? We exist to address Africa's staggering unemployment rate and unlock the potential of the continent’s youth, who are often overlooked and underutilized. 2️⃣ Why is unemployment and underutilization of talent a problem? These issues lead to poverty, economic stagnation, and social instability, limiting opportunities for individuals and communities to thrive. It’s a cycle that needs to be broken. 3️⃣ Why does this problem persist? The root of the problem lies in the lack of effective career guidance, skills development, and access to resources that align with market demands, especially in disadvantaged and rural areas. 4️⃣ Why hasn’t anyone solved this before? Many solutions have been fragmented and incomplete, lacking a comprehensive approach that combines career guidance, practical experimentation, and a focus on aligning education with real market needs, particularly in underserved regions. 5️⃣ Why is CareerKit the right solution? CareerKit is unique because we offer a holistic, accessible, and scalable approach to career guidance and skills development. Our flagship tool, the RIASEC Board Game, empowers African youth to discover their strengths, align their skills with market needs, and ultimately, reduce unemployment by unlocking underutilized talent. We’re not just another initiative; we’re a movement to create meaningful, sustainable change. As President Thabo Mbeki once asked, “What is the Africa we want, and what type of leadership is required to get us there?” At CareerKit, we believe the answer lies in empowering our youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to lead our continent into a brighter future. 🌍 Join us in this journey to transform Africa’s potential into reality. Together, we can create the Africa we want! 🌟 Thank you to Social Shifters, Shifters 100 Academy for such a great session on the 5 whys. #CareerKit #YouthEmpowerment #AfricanYouth #CareerGuidance #SkillsDevelopment #UnleashingPotential #SustainableChange #RIASEC #Leadership #AfricaWeWant

Happy International day for rural women✨ Today, on International Day for Rural Women, we honor the incredible strength, leadership, and resilience of rural women who are transforming communities and driving change from the ground up. At Positive Life Kenya, we are privileged to work alongside these women—mothers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers—who are breaking barriers and building brighter futures for their families and beyond. Through our programs at Kiotani School and Faraja House, we’ve seen how empowered rural women turn challenges into opportunities. Whether through tailoring, cosmetology, or entrepreneurship training, they are becoming economic pillars and community leaders. These women are not just caretakers—they are trailblazers, creating sustainable solutions for food security, education, and economic growth. Rural women are at the heart of building resilient communities and advancing sustainable development. Today, we celebrate their indomitable spirit and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their journeys of empowerment. When rural women thrive, entire communities thrive.
