Dimitris Zissis informed me of the new Maritime and Coastguard Agency general exemption for USVs below 2.5 meters (MGN 702(M)). First of all, this is a step in the right direction. However, I see some limitations. A typical use case for such USVs is bathymetry, monitoring of sub-surface installations, etc., which can include using the USV as a launch and recovery vessel for small ROVs and AUVs. So, this exemption might limit such operations with the following conditions: - The vessel is not permitted to tow another vessel or object - The vessel is not permitted to be fitted with a lifting device - The vessel is not permitted to operate as a mother vessel This makes me wonder: Is a tethered ROV considered a towed object, or does the cable make the USV and ROV a single object? :) MGN 702(M): https://lnkd.in/dUbqp6uE

In most countries, including Greece, small boats under 2.5 meters in length are exempt anyway from most regulatory requirements. Lets hope that this is a starting point for larger vessels
