🌟 Reflecting on a Valuable Experience 🌟 I’m thrilled to share that I have completed a one-month internship as a Legal Intern with Frontiers Welfare Society! During my internship, I had the opportunity to delve into several impactful areas of law, gaining hands-on experience and deepening my understanding of critical legal issues: 🔍 Key Areas of Focus: Legal Rights: Protecting Children and Marginalized Communities- I contributed to initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights of vulnerable populations, including children and marginalized communities. This involved researching legal frameworks and supporting advocacy efforts to promote their welfare. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)- I assisted in addressing issues related to intellectual property rights, helping to ensure that creators’ works are legally protected and addressing any potential infringements. Hostile Witnesses in Criminal Trials- I gained insights into the complexities of dealing with hostile witnesses, including understanding legal strategies for managing such scenarios in criminal trials. Legal Debate and Advocacy- Participating in debates and discussions on various legal topics enhanced my analytical skills and provided a platform to engage with different perspectives on legal issues. Finally, after two years of reviews and back and forth with the editor, the Journal of Social Work Education has released my critique of unpaid social work field education. It is completely unacceptable that social work interns are not paid for their labor. It is an exploitative practice that harms students. As social workers, we need to take a stand against these egregious injustices committed by our profession. The abstract follows: As an exploitative practice institutionalized within social work education, field education is a problem for social work ethics. Unpaid internships are exploitative practices that produce a double bind of exploitation between agency and university. Social workers should oppose exploitation of student interns. Social workers should: (a) advocate for the Department of Labor to clearly define the role of internship field education as a site of labor, (b) advocate for the Council on Social Work Education to explicitly require that social work field education is a paid position, and (c) advocate for greater public funding for social service agencies and social work students. As concrete social action, social workers should organize and participate in the movement against unpaid internships. The article can be accessed from the journal here: https://lnkd.in/gWYWt-mY If you do not have institutional access, you can read it on my Research Gate profile: https://lnkd.in/gt_rFQmp #socialwork #fieldeducation #exploitation #analyticmarxism

Social work students need PAID internships. NOW. There are multiple options to come up with the money, as Payment 4 Placements (U.S.) has shown and delivered on: state legislation, university funds, agency funds (larger agencies), grants, and FEDERAL WORK STUDY. If a social work program isn’t exploring how to leverage these resources or get creative in coming up with others, they are accepting the status quo, which is oppressive. National Association of Social Workers should be part of this campaign, along with all social work schools and agencies. Anti-oppressive social work challenges the status quo, always asking who is harmed by this practice and who benefits. The students keep organizing because they are the most harmed. We have to stop accepting unpaid internships as “the way it is.” Let’s move forward towards an equitable profession!
