Heat Strengthened glass undergoes a slower cooling process compared to tempered glass, resulting in a unique balance of strength and breakage characteristics. This glass is approximately twice as strong as annealed glass of the same size and thickness and possesses about half the strength of fully tempered glass. The thermal strengthening process induces a surface compression ranging from 6000 to 9000 psi, significantly enhancing its durability while minimizing the likelihood of Nickel Sulfide (NiS) inclusions, which can cause spontaneous breakage in tempered glass. When broken, Heat Strengthened glass tends to shatter into larger shards, unlike tempered glass, which breaks into smaller, less dangerous pieces. This characteristic makes it an excellent choice for general glazing applications, where multiple layers of glass ensure that even if one-layer breaks, the glass remains contained within the frame. If one thing is wrong, it’s bad. If two things are wrong, it can only get worse… Back in the 80's, aluminium joinery wasn’t powder-coated - it was anodized. Many designs lacked condensation channels and weep holes, meaning winter condensation couldn’t drain outside. Instead, water would pool and flow onto the window sill. Now, imagine adding insult to injury with MDF window reveals.😲 These highly absorbent materials couldn’t handle moisture, swelling and distorting at the first sign of trouble. When two wrongs combine, things can only go downhill! Always consider materials that work in harmony to keep homes dry and protected.
