What’s my “Why VC”? At Harlem Capital it’s always been to break down barriers and increase access to VC funding for women and people of color. And every day I try to live that mission to the fullest - through our investing, our ecosystem work, and our intern program. We’ve invested in 60+ companies and 75+ founders across our two funds. Our team dug into the data to measure our impact across our portfolio and the ecosystem. Portfolio Impact - 384+ jobs created by HCP’s portfolio companies, 36% identify as people of color (POC) and 35% as women - 114 total management positions created, 44% held by POC and 36% held by women Capital Impact (2022-2023): - 6% of all Black & Latino (B&L) seed capital raised was HCP HCP-led syndicates - 15% of all Black seed deal volume ($) was HCP-led syndicates We’re only 5 years in to a long journey and it’s incredible to celebrate these milestones. WE LOVE GROWTH. Why? Because (say it with me if you know what comes next) if you are not moving forward, you are moving backward. We grow in all the ways, all the time, and we have no plans to slow down. We live in the present, of course. That is how we crush the work. But we also keep our eyes on the horizon. Always. I'm both proud and humbled to be part of this team. Eric Cup and I have known each other for [checks notes] a billion years, and have always respected each others work, so it didn't take much convincing when he called me in late 2021 and asked me to join the team with one overarching goal: GROWTH. That wouldn't have happened without the dedication of this team and their willingness not only to get into the rocket, but to design and build it as well. Are we doing everything right as we grow? Probably not, but we are also unafraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Are we having fun? Most of the time, yes. Do we love helping our clients turn their hopes and dreams into real, tangible experiences? Uh, spoiler alert: That is why we get out of bed in the morning!
