FormulaE introduces the #NXTGenCup, a groundbreaking initiative to nurture young talent in #sustainableracing.  Introducing the NXT Gen Cup, the world's first 100% #electric junior touring car series designed to foster the #nextgeneration of racing stars.   Featuring both #male and #female drivers, this series will run alongside the #ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, showcasing young talent on iconic circuits across Europe. The FIA World Motor Sport Council convened today, 17 October, for its third meeting of 2024. The meeting was chaired by President Mohammed Ben Sulayem with World Council members joining in person at the FIA offices in Paris, and via video conference. President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “It has been a busy and productive few months since we last met, and as we head into the final months of 2024, I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support. Just four months after its announcement, the Affordable Cross Car design blueprints for the Level 2 category have now been delivered to the global network of 147 Member Clubs. And, next week will see the third edition of the Motorsport Games taking place in Valencia, as it brings nations and drivers together for the world’s biggest festival of motor sport. Later this year I look forward to sharing further details on the new FIA Karting Plan. “The regulation changes for Formula 1 in 2026 will ensure the sport remains financially robust and has greater road relevance, alongside the introduction of upgraded safety features that do not compromise exciting racing. "My thanks to Stefano Domenicali for our continued partnership as we progress the first joint strategy for the future of Formula 1.” “The implementation of a strong commercial strategy and a robust accounting process continues to be reflected in the reduction we see in our deficit, and I am proud to confirm that we are successfully meeting our objective of being a financially sustainable federation." The FIA World Motor Sport Council has solidified future regulations for multiple racing categories, ensuring sustainable progress, competitive innovation, and fan engagement. 🇪🇸 Formula 1 and Spain: A Legacy of Speed and Passion 🏎️💨 Formula 1 has a deep-rooted history in Spain, where the sport has grown from early races to producing legendary drivers who’ve left a mark on the track. Icons like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz have made Spain a key player in F1, inspiring generations and bringing motorsport to the heart of Spanish culture. For my Spanish class project, I had the chance to dive into this legacy. Researching the careers of Spain’s top drivers and their impact on Formula 1 revealed how deeply the sport is woven into the cultural fabric of the country. From studying race archives to tracking driver milestones, each step was a discovery of how Formula 1 and Spanish identity are so closely connected. As someone who’s passionate about F1, this project meant more than just research. It was a journey of appreciation, uncovering the spirit and history that make this sport so remarkable. America's Cup, anyone? If you are like me, or outside of the relatively small and fanatic followers of what is the oldest active competition in international sport--the first race was on August 22, 1851, some 45 years before the first modern Olympics took place in Athens--chances are you will all but ignore this year's America's Cup finals, that are underway off the waters of Barcelona, Spain on October 12. After all, there are the finals of WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) with New York Liberty in the mix; the New York Yankees and New York Mets are making a run at conference titles and potentially World Series wins in Major League Baseball (MLB); the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs are making an early claim to potentially wining the National Football League (NFL)'s Super Bowl for a record third year in a row; the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) are underway; England, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh are playing some exciting cricket matches; US college football rivalries are unfolding; and the group stage of UEFA Nations League is on! But here are three reasons why you should really care about the America's Cup this year: 1) For the first time in America's Cup's 173-year history, there is--well past about time, I say--there is a Women's America's Cup. After grueling races, the 12-nation competition is down to Britain vs Italy today, with state-of-the art foiling boats--so far been dominated by men--and dramatically improving opportunities for women at the highest level of professional sailing. 2) And it could very well be a two-fer for Britain. After 173 years of hurt--the very first race was Britain vs America, where the New York Yacht Club, racing a design revelation of a boat called America, left 14 British boats of the Royal Yacht Squadron in its wake, and America would go to win the Cup for the next 132 years!--Britan's INEOS Britannia has a fighting chance against defending champions Emirates Team New Zealand in the best-of-13 race series starting Saturday (10/12) 3) And the final reason--and if you follow me on LinkedIn, you know where I am going with this--because digital technology is now at the heart of who could win the America's Cup. And because we, at McKinsey & Company with our QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey 'insights to impact' edge, are all about creating measurable value beyond the tech hype and know a thing or two about winning the Cup. The America’s Cup has always been as much about technology and innovation as it is about sailing. Boat designs are governed by the competition’s “Class Rule, ” which leaves small opportunities for design tweaks that might give one team an advantage over another. If brilliantly seized, those opportunities can translate into race-day performance. How did we do this? Why are we seeing peloton style racing in Formula E? 🏎️⚡️ I spoke to the engineers to find out ⬇️ Here’s the online version of my article on Formula E strategy. It was great fun digging into the ‘why’ behind this new era of Formula E racing. Interestingly, despite not being an aero-dominant championship, it’s all to do with aerodynamics! 🌀 What do you think about this peloton style of racing? Like it or loathe it? #technicalwriting

Just completed a 2 days-course for Road Race Course Measurer, held by the Swedish Federation of Athletics. This included a lot of theory, examples, learning about which equipment to have and how to use it, the impact of weather on measurement, rules on how/where to measure, what to consider to adjust an existing race route or create a route from scratch, and more. We practiced on measuring manually a calibration distance, for then using it on bike to ride around a test course, measuring the total distance as well as between control points. With all those data, it was left to calculate quite a lot, analyse, and it led to many interesting discussions. The second day was similar, with calibration of the bike on another calibration distance, and measurement of the test route in the other direction (same control points). Weather-like, I learn that 2°C, cold, windy, and snowflakes in the air is not the weather I like to do this type of measurements... but it might have been close to optimal. What happens next? Back home with a Jones counter, have to service my hybrid-bike to mount it on, and get out there to practice measuring routes. Might start as well with the ones I run... Homework and discussions with course teachers remain, before they decide whether one/several of us course-participants has/have what it takes to be officially certified Road Race Course Measurer for the Swedish Federation of Athletics. Note: as a marathon runner, I know how discussions flourish after each race on "How long was your race? My GPS says I ran too much...". (Clearly remembering Berlin marathon 2013, where I "ran" 42.8km...). Data is data, and as usual quality of data (GPS) is key. GPS accuracy might have improved, it is still often not taking into account possible hinders on the road, limited precision, ways runners find to "cut short", and more. Good tool for running and training though, but not for measuring properly and certify a road race course 😆
