📢𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐔𝐃𝐑: There will be a one-year delay in the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Additional outcomes were also agreed yesterday. 📢𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) remains a staunch supporter of the EUDR’s ambition to create deforestation-free supply chains, in Europe and globally. We urge stakeholders to take the tangible steps already available and continue advancing forest stewardship together. This is Part 7 of a seven-part series. Another important initiative discussed by Molefe is the recycling and recovery of #Refrigerants. South Africa has established four facilities dedicated to the recovery and recycling of refrigerants, which are crucial for minimising the #Environmental impact of #Refrigerant use. These facilities are involved in the reclamation of refrigerants from old systems, which are then purified and reused, reducing the need for new chemicals. These efforts are part of the country’s strategy to support the circular economy in the #RefrigerationSector. On October 2, the European Commission proposed an additional 12-month phase-in period for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Founded in 1994 after the Rio Summit as a response to governmental inaction on global forestry challenges, FSC remains fully committed to supporting deforestation-free markets. The organisation continues to emphasise the need for urgent and decisive action to prevent deforestation. If you're talking to your farmer suppliers about carbon for your sustainability program, you could be accidentally giving forestry advice... for which you need to be a registered forestry advisor. Tread carefully if you're doing any of the following when talking to farmers about any supply chain carbon removal programs: 🌳 Advising one of your farmers on the best tree species for carbon sequestration and biodiversity enhancement in a specific area of their land. 🌳 Discussing with a farmer on ETS eligibility for a new area of planting they’ve done and whether they might like to participate in your carbon program instead. 🌳 Advising a farmer that a browsing pest control program or fencing for stock exclusion would enhance their carbon sequestration. 🌳 Advising a farmer on how non-ETS native forests on their land contribute to carbon sequestration and could help offset emissions from other parts of the supply chain. The 2024 Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment was held on 16/17 September. One of the most significant challenges highlighted is the impending impact of the Kigali Amendment. This international treaty aims to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are widely used as refrigerants. This change will affect every sector within the cold chain, pushing companies to adapt quickly to new regulations before the end of the year. The urgency to pivot towards environmentally friendly refrigerants is paramount, yet many industry players appear reluctant to initiate new projects due to uncertainty about compliance and implementation.
